Mark, what is up with Che Guervera picture?
It is funny that he is becoming an icon about something and no one really knows what he was all about. He is one the few revolutionaries that actually tried to make a positive difference in the world instead personal power or pride. Whether you agree with me or not, a man that actually sacrifices his life (which he would have been very rich and comfortable) in order to save people (although you may not agree with his cause or techniques) is quite honourable. Which contradicts many revolutionaries in the USSR.(IMAO) |

I like the avatar Doc.
I agree, Che was a great revloutionary who committed his life to his cause. Although he was no angel, and you must take the good with the bad.
The thing that pisses me off is the fact he's become such a pop icon - something he fought so hard against. I've seen middle aged moms with the che guevara purses, 11 yr old girls rocking che t-shirts, and it seems requisite for every angry teen, yet you ask them what the person stands for they couldn't tell you. The bitter irony of che being a pop icon... |

Actually he was a good rugby player also. Played Flanker. Other Famous Rugby players Clinton, Bush, Lenin (I think) or Stalin(I forget), and the Pope.
I agree with you. Media without the message. He had nothing and nearly died several times. |

Although Dmitri is correct that he is now a pop icon. Some reality show will be made from it. This based on memory so it will have gaps.
Basically in a nutshell, Che was a weak child through asthma and was forced to stay at home and read and read. He eventually became better and decided to become a doctor. When finishing his medical school, he decided to motorcycle around Latin American. He meet Fidel in Mexico and became Friends. After awhile, Fidel convinced him to be a doctor on his revolution to cuba. During the revolution, Che intelligence and how well read he was, he became the military leader and the moral icon after Fidel. It was his techniques that he borrowed from Moa Tsing Tao(I think) that was used for victory. Che wanted to spread the revolution to other parts and USA wanted him dead. USSR & China originally supported CHe, but Che was more of a socialist than Communist. Fidel was also did not like him around gathering power (sort of Stalin Trotsky thingy). It was rumoured that the USSR and China both wanted him out. SO he left Cuba to start a revolution in Boliva without any support from any superpowers, USA (with USSR blessing it was rumour) financed the Bolivians and help to have him hunted down and killed. He had such a following that cut off his hands so they could identify his remains. Now his picture and image are being used to sell capital goods made in countries in sweat shops to finance oppression of their people. Ironic? |

I chose his picture as an avatar because of the reference to Generation Ï
I have never truly related to my own generation. Perhaps I found it too flawed and greedy/selfish etc.
Dr Fauste | Quote: | Has anyone read Generation Ï?
I am curious on the content. It is supposely tell the difference between youth living in the capitalist times versus the socialist times. Because I find there is a HUGE difference from older Russians and young Russians. New Russians are much more image oriented and money concsious than the previous generation. Like the Generation X, it was stated that the youth are more the "lost generation". This book supposely compares Gen X to the Russian version of Gen X. No flaming, because this is from another person point of review two years ago and not necessarily mine. |
I am more in tune with Generation X. Generation X seems less greedy, less selfish. Perhaps I am wrong.
Most of my friends are 20 years younger than me or more. I don't relate to people of my own age, 44. I guess I am what they call a "Baby boomer". I don't know.
