| I am leaving for Moscow in January and I'm from Arizona so I have NO winter clothes at all. I am wondering if it would be cheaper to buy coats, boots, etc. in Moscow rather than while I am still in the US |

| Well, when you arrive to Moscow it's going to be rather cold, so it would be better to get the clothes beforehand. The prices in Moscow are also almost twice higher than in the USA (for clothes), so it wouldn't be a very economically wise choice to buy the clothes here. |

You can buy excellent winter clothes and they will deliver them. High quality. Better than you will find in your average store.
If you are worried about costs, then dress LOTS of layers. Sweat pants layered can be used instaed of buying long underwear. Windbreaker with fleece top, and maybe a couple of other shirts. If outside alot, buy good mittens rather than gloves, good hat that covers your ears(possibly your face), Neckwarmer rather than a scarf, and good pair of work boots have room with nice fleece or wool socks can be used instead of buying snow boots. I lived in Northern canada for 20 years, I know what I am talking about. |

| The only exception for what Dima has said about the cost of clothing in Russia in comparison to US prices might be fur hats and coats. Last month Americans purchased all rabbit hats supply in our department store because they are only 20 dollars here. |

I good source of clothes at a reasonable cost is LLBean. You can order on line and get the stuff within a couple of days.....assuming they have the item.
I'll second the layering suggestion. That's what made me think of LLBean. |

| Just get yourself some boots with thick soles (wear them with thick woolen socks if they are not well insulated) and woolen sweatshirts which you can wear under a windbreaker or ski jacket. You'll survive for a few days in this, enough to do shopping. I think it is cheaper to buy winter clothes in Russia than in USA, namely overcoat/furcoat, hats and boots. Another alternative is to borrow clothes from friends... which was what I did till I had time to buy clothes in Moscow. I'm sure you'll have a better range of winter clothes here than in AZ. |

Ashley, if you're still in Arizona--buy the clothes here. Russians NEVER wear LL Bean parkas and hiking boots. You'll be picked out as a tourist everytime you hit the sidewalk. Russians are very fashionable in their own Russian way. I brought tons of clothes from the States and have never worn most of them because they really don't fit in here. There are some great places to buy coats and boots very reasonably and you won't be walking around Moscow looking like you're off for a Sierra trek. Big mistake.
If it isn't too late, let me know and I can tell you where some of these places are (not downtown for sure!). |

Hehehe, I can relate to Ashley's situation. I haven’t owned even a light jacket in the 10 years I have lived in Phoenix Arizona.
You have probably already left for your trip, however I hope you did the gutsy thing and brought some layers and bought the clothes in Moscow.
I can’t see robbing yourself of the added cultural experience of buying your winter clothes there. At least get your winter coat there =). I'm envious.....
Have fun, I can't wait until I have the oppertunity myself. |
