Hi Everyone,
Would anyone like to provide their favourite "readings" (novels, diaries, poems, etc,) written about St Petersburg and environs?

I posted previously, a message which read in part:

I also find it interesting to read "literature" from, or about, the places I visit. When compared to the total cost of travel, a few roubles for a book is a small price to pay to enrich the experience.

For example, Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment" is set in St Petersburg in the late 1800s. It is still a good, but "heavy" read. You will understand more of the Russian psyche after reading this book.

There are also two interesting literary guides: "A Traveller's Companion to St Petersburg" and "The Companion Guide to St Petersburg".

However, the post seems to have been "hijacked" by interesting discussions of "culture and clubbing" and "under-age children with parents in licensed premises".

One of my original suggestions was that, perhaps visiters to this site would like to add their own reading suggestions????

Nick.

Can you read Russian?

Your comment in the past thread should be direct that you are interested to examine the written history of Russia and that you fascinated to see things lives than great writers and understand nature & travels that these great men have gone through?

Dmitri posted an interest link about peterswalking tour which is made for interests like you. They have a tour specifically great authors of Russia. If you can Russian, Mark has posted a link to read/download great Russian literature (in Russian of course) Look Che Guevera thread(do not ask). Also your friend Anna has website and does tours I think.

As on this site , you will notice that there is list of great authors from Russia. You may examine them for possible suggestion, plus you may want to state what you like to narrow down the possible selections of books. Russia has a vast number of great authors, you might want to focus on the authors with best potential. To get these suggests, you should state your taste preference. Otherwise people will showing you books that you do not like.

BTW
People have their own opinion and you should not condem or enforce your opinion on them. We like to help you and hope you enjoy your trip and see many interesting things. But not to be insulted or berated on our decisions in life. Please just ask for clarification instead calling posters idiots or morons. Uday and Brendal have a different opinion than you and in their own way were trying to help. A little understanding, patience and communication will carry you a long way especially alone in a foreign country. You will be marvelled at the sights you will see, but I give you this advice. Examine the people around you and think like the great writers, you will be absolutely fascinated loveliness of the SPB cultural in one point of time that you can only see and understand. I would appreciate to hear your thoughts and opinion of SPB and the books your read.
Good Luck

Try "Nicholas and Alexandra" by Robert Massie, it's in English for sure Smile and I also heard people discussing Susan Massie's books on Russia - but I have never read one.
