I just read a report on safety in Russia and got scared to death to travel there. It got to the point that I figured there was no way I could travel through St. Pete's and Moscow without being robbed. They seemed to be saying daylight muggings of American tourists in big touristy spots in the big cities were commonplace.

I'm planning on travelling through Russia by overnight trains by myself, entering through St. Pete's, traveling through Moscow (possibly Novgorod and Voronezh also), and exiting on the way to Kiev at the Ukrainian border. Is this a safe plan? Is it possible to store belongings in a train station compartment of some sort for a day? If so, is that recommended?

Thanks!

CN,
Were there any problems concerning American women? If so, please send them to my PM or email me with those reports. Thanks!

There were points saying, basically, that women shouldn't travel alone. There were probably a few other things, but I only glossed over them, since I'm not a woman and I'm not travelling with any.

Try this link:

I have other reports, but being new to this website, I'm not sure how to email them to you.

In answer to you first question.

You will be safe as long as you follow basic common sense.

Avoid dark alleys, keep your valuables secure, be aware of pickpockets in crowded situations, buy your own drinks and don't let them out of your sight when clubbing. Surely these are precautions you take in your own environment so why not stick to the same precautions when traveling? The only thing that I would caution you on is, do not expect much help from the police if you get into a situation. The bureaucracy is something else!

I have been to Russia 5 times for extended periods and have never seen a mugging or robbery. The worst I have witnessed were some drunks trying to fight each other. Not to say that crime does not occur, just that it does not occur at every turn as you convey in your post.

To your second question.

The overnight trains are absolutely safe. Again keep your valuables close to you and you won't have any problems.

And finally, all of the stations I have been to have had storage facilities.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a bunch for your post! That helps a lot. I probably just shouldn't be so paranoid.

It is wrong.

The only problem I can see so far is that you will be questioned about you registration, and whilst near Msk and Spb it is not a problem ( as you have 72 hr to register ), on Russian side of Ukrainian border the question 'where you were registered after Moscow ( and why, if not ) will be raised.
Store belongings? Yes, it is possible.

I have looked up some reports before leaving to St. Petersburg, but I did not see any reports for American women in or going to Russia. I am assuming to just take the normal precautions as a woman. It seems there has not been too many problems targeting American women visiting Russia, but if you know of any let me know... Wink
