I wonder if they were seeing pictures of North America in a totally opposite light during the 70's. I look at those pictures and it could've been us a kids here. We really wore fashions like that back then? UGH!
Communism was too extreme my boyfriend says. He says countries have to find a gold middle as he refers to it. Socialism I imagine, though a lot of people think that is Communism and it's not. I just hope we can smarten up and help ourselves to a better way of living. It's becoming to hard to make ends meet for too many people. We are being drained dry of what little we have.

They portray Russia very TRUTHFULLY! Not like today's EU/US propaganda that shows how CCCP was so horrible! Not like Bush putting up a stupid memorial in Washington, DC, "To Victims of Communist Terror". Victims of what, you fucking moronic monkey-man? Victims of this?! We had a good life! Then you Americans (no offence Surfguy) came and destroyed our country! Just like later you destroyed Yugoslavia. You always were the terrorists, not us! No wander only stupid czechs and hungarians and estonian fascist garbage believe you! No one in Russia will ever trust the American goverment after all you put us through anymore! Ever! I mean, Russians I talked to will have their country rather team with China, Iran, even fucking North Korea, but not US! That is what you did with your post-cold war strategy! Now, most Russians and a whole lot of other people in the former (and I say former with tears on my eyes), but former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics see America as one thing: AN ENEMY.
As far as the pictures... Geez, you have no idea just what kind of nostalgia they bring... my eyes water just looking at them! I remember my childhood, the country I was born in... oh, man.

Your boyfriend doesn't know what he is talking about. In USSR, unlike todays Russia, there was no ethnic tensions, little crime, at least untill Gorbachev and his "Perestroika", very high morals (Soviet Cinema movies had very little, if any at all sexual scenes!), prostitution was shunned and looked down upon, and there was no such thing as HIV, unlike now! Homosexualism was FORBIDDEN! There was almost no corruption in the government, or police! No "dedovschina" in the Army! No to mention we had a huge level of power in the world! People were PROUD to say: "I am a Soviet man!". Sounds like a bad place to live to you? Go and tell your boyfriend to read up on the USSR and what it was like, and then open his trap! |

I am not one to say anything, but this is just my thoughts, I think all countries have SOB's running them and guess who gets all the blame, the hard working individuals who are clueless to all this political crap. Honey, you cannot go around blaming America for everything that goes on in Russia or any other country. From what I have read and saw some of those leaders over there have done just about enough damage to put Bush on the Saint pedestal and believe me, Bush is far from being a Saint.
Don't hold it against me but I cannot see how America destroyed Russia and Yugoslavia. What did America do to destroy such a big country with strong hearts and stubborn people in it. Proud, strong people who won't stand for it. Tell me! |

| well I see a lot of pride and I can respect that...they were some great pictures which I posted because I too appreciated them. Governments are the ones to be angry with...and sorry but from our perspective communism was a bad thing for Russia...come on how many russians did stalin and lenin have killed...this just doesn't happen in the USA...but know this as an American I am fascinated with Russia and do not think ill of the place...just trying to understand and learn. But if the USA caused the down fall of the USSR...well then it was the USSR who allowed for it. I seriously think that Russia will over the next 50 years rise to greatness...far surpassing the USSR |

I do not blame Americans. God knows, it was a war, though, thank god, a Cold one, and USA won. We were beaten. We were destroyed. Period. Russia treated Germany the same way in 1945. I blame one person responcible: Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev. His so-called "reforms", "perestroikas", and the "Dry Law" prohibiting ALL alcohol (including cutting down grape farms, and closing wineries) was ridiculous, and it wrecked the economy more then any American influence could have.
I also blame myself, that I saw what was happening to my country, yet could do nothing to stop it...
You have to understand though, many Russians and other Soviet people were and are embittered and hurt by the defeat of our Soviet Empire, and the humiliation, indignity, and powerlessness afterward... It was a new experience: Russia was never small and weak before. There were bad times, but never like this.
When I look at pictures such as these, my head is filled with memories from my youth, and childhood. But my heart is filled with pain, sadness and anger. Over that which we once had... and that which we eventually lost...
Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was right. The fall of the USSR was the greatest catastrophy of the 20th Century. For us at least. For you, Americans it was a Victory, I respect that offcourse...
But I believe we will persevere. Russians are a strong nation. We got up from many beatdowns in our history to fight back and win... |

| I think you were very wrong...you were not beaten! Just now you are regrouping and rebuilding and expanding...don't forget the great depression of the 1930's here in the USA. No the short stint of the 1990s is nothing compared to the history of Russia. Russia has never lost it's identity. Russia is true...the USSR was what was false...Remember too that Russia was the last empire in europe to have it's monarchy to lose thier power...that's very telling. No one day you will see russia a great nation...and once again along side the USA. We are never enemies...more or less just competitors |

The Austrian-Hungarian Empire collapsed in 1918, one year later than the Russian Empire.
The pictures are indeed good. They were made by professionals who knew their job very well. And their job was to show "The Bright Side Of Life", so what we see is a half-truth.
I do not think it is possible to describe the life in the USSR of 60th-80th in few lines. Anyway, I would compare it with a mental institution, like in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", only on a bigger scale. Everyone has a warm bed, feeding according to schedule, a medication (vodka), and no hard work. There are also downsides: some nasty nurses, it is forbidden to go out and to watch TV whenever you want, and those who do not like the rules
are at risk of getting the lobotomy. However, in general such a life is safe and quite tolerable.
Why did the Chief break the barred window and escape? It's dark and cold outside, and also wolves ...BTW, according to the film, the Chief runs off, presumably to Canada. |

You forgot the Civil War, Gulag, and many other things.
| Quote: | ...the Soviet Union appears the greatest megamurderer of all, apparently killing near 61,000,000 people. Stalin himself is responsible for almost 43,000,000 of these. Communist China up to 1987, but mainly from 1949 through the cultural revolution, which alone may have seen over 1,000,000 murdered, is the second worst megamurderer. ..
Communism has been the greatest social engineering experiment we have ever seen. It failed utterly and in doing so it killed over 100,000,000 men, women, and children...

While I admit that this is some food for thought, i do believe that those numbers are a gross exaggeration. I mean, during Stalin's reign, when most of those repressions and executions happen, and the Holodomor, the population of USSR was about 150, 000, 000 people. That means that total number of people who died as a result of Communism at that time couldn't be more then around 30, 000, 000. Right? Okay, now we go farther back to Lenin's time. I know for a fact that around 20, 000, 000 people died at that time.
Then around 10, 000, 000 more died at later times throughout the history of USSR.
That's around 60, 000, 000 in total.
Still a pretty scary number, but no where near 100 mill.
You have to understand. Russia's whole history was built on the blood and sweat of it's people. I mean building the City of Perograd (now St. Petersburg) cost the lives of thousands of men! Why do you think the locals there have a saing: "This City was built on bones!".
That's how it allways was. Our rulers have never had any qualms about sacrificing lives and fortunes of our people to reach thier own goals. It has allways been that way, under every single type of government we've had over the course of our history, and I doubt it will ever change.

| Life in the Soviet times was pretty miserable in the former Soviet Union. There were some good things - music, movies, theater, books, education, etc. But the quality of life was very low. And freedom of expression and religion was non-existent. The country was falling apart - slowly but surely. Nothing could be bought without staying in long lines. |

Russkii...but it's not justified and as for us Americans...we just cannot fathom that...right...wrong...accepted or not...justified or no...we just can't relate. Here there would be a law suit for sure With what Spice says...that's all we heard here back prior to the mid 1990s...I had this conversation tonight with a gf of mine who is from the Ukraine...she was telling me how growing up that yes the standard of living was so very poor...but really too she said they were the happiest times and that really when it's all you know you focus on the good and especially as a child...you just want to have fun and are innocent to the ills of the world...well unless there is war surrounding you. So looking at the links to the photos yes they are propoganda and Daria I think it was who said it right. Russia today has a huge gap between rich and poor...the back bone of places like Canada and the USA is our middle class...which is shrinking and suffereing the most...but the poor here are doing very well...most have cars...most are not hungry...most have opportunities that they can take advantage...and all have hope. This is where the west differed from the USSR...at the time there was no hope. As Spice said the collapse happened gradually...it started long before the 1990s...and the west was out to bankrupt the USSR...and the USSR was not able for what ever reasons to compete. What sticks out in my mind is the fact that there is absolutely no up keep or maintenace over ther on anything...use something till it falls apart and dies. The buildings...cars...etc. And this tells all about the society...to include the government...which was used until it died in 1991. Now there is a rebirth and hopefully this time...the change will be for the better...it's a transition and won't happen over night...but like the USA had...Russia has all the potential in the world. At the turn of the last century the US was just as corrupt...just as raw...just as many resources, and just as naive as is Russia today. So it will be interesting to see what happens here in the future. But remember too...Germany...Japan...and now hopefully Iraq...the west has made those countries into very prosperous ones. And in Russia it has been the west that has gone in and revamped and got the Russian Oil industry back on track and producing and becoming what it is today...this doesn't happen for nothing. Hong Kong hasn't changed one bit since it has gone back to Chinese control...and the Chinese aren't stupid. Infact China has become mnore of a market economy rather than continuing down the communist path...As Spice said communism just doesn't work...not one contry has succeeded under it. Anyways I am excited to see what Russia will become....America is boring now as it's hard being the Greatest Nation this planet has ever seen! |
