This Russian aircraft-carrier boat had a strange story. When it was being built it was called “Riga” - the name of Latvian capital city, but just after the construction was over and 20 minutes later the ceremony of the ship’s launching started they got a call from Moscow demanding to change the name to “VARYAG”, probably just because at that time Latvia demanded independence, so Russian government understood that if they leave the old name, in just a few months one of their top-ships would carry the name of the capital of the another state. So they called and changed the name same day the boat was launched. That was a bad sign.
A few years later, they couldn’t maintain it anymore, and the ship itself demanded some sort of upgrading so they decided to… sell it for iron-and-steel scrap! The company which bought it couldn’t transport it to scrap site, mainly because Turkey didn’t allow the private company to pass the big and scary aircraft-carrier through its waters it in time so it stayed for one and a half year and they seriously considered on abandoning it. Later they got permission from Turkey and moved it from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. And then in Mediterranean it has almost got stuck on sandbank. So it took it a few years to come to travel in its the last journey.

And mine was a high ranking naval officer in the Baltic Fleet who also served his tsar and country with great pride and later fought in the white army. |
The Baltic Fleet, huh? Wasn't it the "great" Baltic Fleet that shamefully lost Port Artur to the Japs? What an emabrrasement that was for Russia... The first European Empire to lose a war to the fucking Asians! Sheesh! BTW, MY Grandfather avenged that loss at Khalkin Gol in 1939 and other places in 1945... So, you want to talk whose Grampa was better... Just kidding! |
From what I remember him telling me, he was in St Petersburg defending it against the Germans, but again that's immaterial in 2007.
What I am saying is that there is no point in dragging up past events in such a vitriolic way. Posting WW2 photos is also a wast of energy. Not many people care.
Why are you in Canada anyway if you can't let go of your past?
You should be back in Russia seeing if you can make a difference if it is so important to you. People that go to a new country generally do so for a better life than the one they are leaving behind. Not to froth at the mouth and continue their bitterness and anger. |

Also Russia has never had a great navy... |
Well, I don't care what anyone says, but THIS was not a "stain":
THIS is a Great Victory, and it will live on in the hearts of those soldiers who fought for it, their children, grandchildren, etc.
Also, I wasn't being racist against anyone. In fact, I have friends who are Asian. Just making a point that the Baltic Fleet's loss of Port Artur to the Japanese was a majour disgrace for Russia. |
well I agree with you here...ruskii... |

Are you kidding me? Yes, now our navy is crap, like it was in Tsar's time. But back in USSR, we had 5 nuclear powered aircraft carriers, many huge battle-cruisers, destroyers, light-cruisers, nuclear subs, patrol craft, etc. Oh, and the "Orlyonok"? The world's first ekranoplan? That, my friend, was 50 years ahead of anything the US ever came up with! 50 years! Here, read up on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-90_Orlyonok |
key word being had...next is unproven...but don't get me wrong...Russia has a great military...or at least did |

Maybe you don't. I do. So do many people whose Grandfathers fought against the Nazis. Not just in Russia. I've met Canadian WW2 vets who believe that this was a Victory of all time. The War to end all wars. (well, unfortunately that didn't work.
BTW, nikir, I know why you don't care. I heard about regiments of volunteers from Russian former White Guard Emigre from France, Germany, etc., who went and fought on Hitler's side. Against their own people. |

Well of course some of them may care, although there are not that many left and of those who are a lot have got on with their lives and don't give it any great amount of thought.
As for your second paragraph, sorry wrong again, his regiment fought across Siberia up to Vladivostock and my grandmother came back over from China in 1921 and dragged him out. You are a twisted little soul aren't you.
I don't care because it was before my time and in any case I am not interested in any war. |

Russki, may I ask why you are talking about war so much especially and old war? I have read about Pearl Harbor and what happen in 1941, I did a paper on it in college as well, but I don't go and dwell on it. I agree this is a bit overwhelming for someone who is young as you.
There is nothing wrong in defending your country and remembering the past "Gone but not forgotten" you can remember the past but DONT live in it. This is very depressing, morbid and negative for a man your age to dwell on this stuff that happened years and years ago.
Are you really your age or are you a man who is 90 years old? Do you have children? A wife? A job? Don't you have life to live? Do you not love what is around you for now?
What about those men who were there, how do you think they feel now if they are still around, don't you think they want to forget old ghost and what haunts them? Can you not walk down a side walk without thinking of war? |
