It seems that Russki has not yet realised that he won't be shot if he voices an opinion that contradicts party philosophy.

My first repnonse will be to Jojo. No, I do not dwell on the past. I just like history. It was my favourite subject at school. I find history ver interesting, and relevant: as a philosopher once said: "Without the Past, the wouldn't be a Future!".
Unfortunately, when we are talking about Russian history, about 60% of our Past was Wars, Wars, oh, and did I mention, Wars. Conquests, defences, revenge... That is what built Russia. Not love, peace, freedom, like some other, peaceful, treehugging countries of the West... And no, I am not a 90 year old man, I am, actually, just 37.

----------------------------------------------------

Next. Nikir. I am not a "twisted little soul". I am just from a different time then you. A different ideology. A different Russia... That is why it's so hard for us to understand each other, even though we are technicaly both Russian... Smile You can say we are from two parallel realities... And yes, maybe I did agree with the Party too much... Years upon years of propaganda and politpotgotovka in the Army will do that to a guy... Laughing

The Sea Infantry training was MUCH harder. It even included bayonnette exersizes, believe it or not, shooting from 15 different positions, including flat on your back, knife throwing, hand-to-hand combat techniques, etc., etc.

That's nice... The parades always were fun to watch...

Lao Shu and ShinsengumiX. I wasn't being racist aginst anyone. I just pointed out that because of what happened at Port Artur, Russia was indeed the first European Empire to lose a war to an Asian Empire, in this case, Japan. And I believe that Port Artur was a disgrace for the Russian Navy, and the Russian Military of the time in general. And, BTW, I am not a Russian suppremacist, in any way. I believe in the ideals of Socialism, and those include Multiculturism, Unity, and Equality. Equality in both Wealth, and Civil Rights. Freedom for all. That is what I was raised on. I abhore greed, fascism, corruption, crime, pointless violence, slavery, and I hate it when a bunch of rich people (Oligarchs), have all the money, and the good life, while the rest, and basicaly the most, of the population live in shit, some are even starving, and no one gives a damn. That is what today's Russia is like. The country I grew up in wasn't like this. I am sorry, but, for all of you Commie-haters out there, the USSR was a MUCH, MUCH better society then today's Russia, let alone the other former Soviet nations. That's not boasting, just fact.

Ruskii...I was asking if you went through the hazing of that in the video...we trained in all the same stuff you did...and went through a lot of hazing...but not like what those recruits or as you guys call them conscripts. Of course prior to about 15 years ago the hazing was far more sever...and today it is definitely not tolerated. But when I received my blood stripes I certainly took a lot of shots to my thighs and arms and had my ankles kicked out from under me. But too it wasn't in the fashion or context of what that video showed. That is poor leadership and is unacceptable...if you think it makes the recruits stronger...it doesn't. And injured/wounded troops means that others have to pick up the slack. Those DI's should be severly punished and court marshalled. They may be tough and they may be bad asses...but they drop just the same from a round going on target

Well not a different time, I am only a year older than you are. Certainly a different ideology though.

I had my upbringing and education in Australia and apart from Russian school on a Saturday and the friends of my parents no contact with Russia at all. Of course every one of the thousands of Russians in Australia at that time got out of there a long time ago and were very anti communist. At the Russian school when we learnt history, there wasn't any after 1917. Very Happy

So there you see you have your ideas and I mine and no doubt reality is somewhere in the middle. I do think that the thinking of my grandparents generation only got more bitter as time went on, because the communists didn't fall.

I never went to the CCCP, my mum did a couple of times and said that it wasn't nearly as bad as she had expected. I do enjoy my trips to todays Russia though.

The thing is that all that aggression is in the past and while you can dislike individuals, it is totally wrong to belittle an entire race. Maybe it does offend you that the Estonians have taken down a monument, but remember it's their country, now and really, they can present their history as they see fit.

I have been to the Czech republic and to Hungary where Russians from the Soviet times are not regarded kindly and not many monuments to those days stand. There are however many Russian tourists in those countries and no animosity is shown to them whatsoever.

So people do get over their disappointments and life does go on. Very Happy

No probs, when I read that you were 37, it calmed me down, cos I know that in the USSR there was a big emphasis (even political) on multicultural international friendship, (which the 'NEW' Russia sadly ignores) which makes me very proud of the ussr, because, whether people believe it or not, life does seem better then than it is now. I'm Russian as well, and it pains me as well to see a couple of rich assholes taking everything, what's more, the 'new' russia seems to use these same assholes as icons for how 'successful' (LOL!!!) the country's becomes.
So, forgive and forget, i can see you're not a rascist Very Happy

I can't call that wishful thinking, but it's certainly something to strive towards, and, if achieved, would improve Russia...

It is unbelievable how people can be so naive. How USSR can be considered nowadays like being a paradise on earth ? A regime which killed 20 millions of its own people in extermination camp (yes it was an extermination, the only difference with the Nazi is the Soviets had time to do their dirty job).
A place you cannot leave, a place where a simple joke could send you for 20 years in a gulag with 99% of no return ?

I am not talking about Russki, he is a desperate case, this said, I assume that none of his close friends or family has been sent to a gulag...

The most funny is that Russki is not even aware of how lucky he is, if Canada was like the Soviet Union, for 1/10 of the drivels he wrote in this forum he would be probably in the middle of the forest near the polar circle sawing some trees for a tiny piece of bread.

Surviving until the next month, week or even day seems to be an on going concern. If you're worried about having adequate food, drink and shelter, being able to read an article in a newspaper that is critical of the current administration is not going to be high on your priority list.

You are the "desperate case". You are judging USSR by the first 20 yrs of it's exsistence. Yes, a lot of people died under Stalin. He was a very paranoid man, who sent people to Gulag on a simple hunch. Other Soviet leaders weren't nearly as brutal though... Brezhnev's time was the best! And that was my time! The time I when grew up! hehe
