well...I guess from the West's perspective...we look at chechnya and Bosnia and so many other conflicts that happened in current or former Communist, Socialist, or or former USSR republics or Areas of influence...I.E. cambodia, china, Azerbaijan, Armenia, etc and we have seen the staggering death tolls of those conflicts there...and it is just our understanding that life comes very cheap! And in Russia isn't this the case...I think it certainly is...which is why corruption is so rampant and why people disaapear mysteriously. But I think perhaps Putin wll instill law and order...or so his predecessor will

Was it? Confused

How about : "Brezhnev Doctrine", Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, " Prague Spring ", persecution of dissidents, shortages of consumer goods, long lines, growth of the black market, alcoholism, declining life expectancy, rising infant mortality....etc.?

Brezhnev was just as "good" as all of them...

What made you say that, Spice? My husband is too busy. And yes, he is burning with ideas; fortunately, there are other places he can use them for, beside internet .

When are we going to hear from your wife? That would be a very interesting event.

Whatever Brezhnev did, he was not nearly as brutal as Stalin. Russki is right here.

What is point of that argument and discussion?

Stalin was a brutal dictator that was responsible for millions of deaths, torture, misery and destruction of many cities and ethnic groups. That's documented and known. During the 70s and 80s the country was certainly much less brutal. It was simply in the stable poor state where roads were terrible, jobs pay just enough to survive, freedom of speech only existed in the kitchen, all private enterprise was prohibited, and people lived mostly on what was earned by previous generations - apartments, dachas, etc, were accumulated over the course of 2-3 generations. There was very little choice in how and where people could live. One had to stay in long lines to buy pretty much anything. Freedom of travel was nonexistent. It was a closed and relatively poor country - period.
