Great trip! I was there for 8 days, and I had a blast. Reminder, I'm an African American with a Russian wife and we have a daughter together. Everybody (strangers especially) were absolutely head over heels about my daughter. She's 19 months, and adorable as all can be. We were on the Metro a number of times, and people were smiling at her, which you know, is a rarity for any Moscovian to smile at a stranger.

There were a number of stares at me, which I'm okay with, and expected. At one point, right outside of my wife's parent's apartment, a couple of teenage girls came up and asked for my picture on their cell phone. African Americans are still a rarity there, but hip hop is alive and well, so it's not like most Moscovians hate black people (like has been said on this board).

I did get stopped by a cop one time (my last night there) while walking on the sidewalk right outside of the apartment drinking a beer. There were 3 cops, and the a**hole on the passenger side stopped to ask for my passport. He claimed it was illegal for me to be drinking on the sidewalk, but they pulled up while driving on the sidewalk...go figure. Once the other 2 cops saw I was an American, and my wife was Russian, they were begging the a**hole to move on. He had a point to prove, but couldn't do it, so they left. Be aware of f***ers like this, because it's apparently common. We all have heard stories of these types of Russian cops, so just smile, and roll with it if you ever encounter it. They can't and won't touch you.

All in all, it was great, and I can't wait to go back again.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up.

It is in fact illegal to consume alcohol while walking along the footpath now. This law is largely ignored by residents and militia alike, however if they wanted to get you they could have. I am a bit surprised you got off scot free as the militia in Moscow are notorious for exhorting money from tourists. You were lucky! Good that it was the only brush you had with them.

Alcohol or beer?
As of 25 may 07,
"На сегодняшний день в России запрещено распивать на улицах и в общественных местах крепкие алкогольные напитки, а пиво нельзя пить только несовершеннолетним."

i.e. beer is ok for adults, as being not an alcohol drink. Unless you are competely drunk with beer - there is a law that you can't be drunk - however the extent of being drunk is determined by militia on their mind only. Also no beer in transport , cultural and sport locations.

It's a fine line, and like so many things there, totally up to the discretion of the militia. One day a couple of beers is no problem, the next day you can be pronounced dead drunk.

As for "а пиво нельзя пить только несовершеннолетним." Ha ha.

Чего хаха? It's the law. The mere fact militia ignore this law and dont give a rat ass about drunk teens is simply because teens have no money ( had they have, thay'd rather buy another bottle ). It's such more profitable to pick on stray foreigner.

Смеюсь потому что в любом городе, несовершенно летний сосут пиво на каждой улице и в каждом парке.

Разве они не нарушают закон.

А ты чего такая серьезная?

Ну тогда прости. Думал что девушка. Embarassed
Все таки дурной закон если его ни кто поддерживать не будет. По этому мне смешно. А туристы есть туристы. когда я там, тоже турист. Я охота для ментов. Very Happy

They passed that no drinking on the street law during my last trip to russia.
I never had any problem from any police in russia, they would usualy smile, wink, wave or give me a thumbs up when they seen me walking on the street. I have been trying to convince my wife to take a trip back to see some of our friends but it looks like she is through with russia.
So this means the next plan is to send some invitations to some of my best friends there
