Seeing that I'm American and am not terribly familiar with Russian visas I am full of questions. I've applied for a student visa and I'm a little confused about whether it's multi-entry or not. In the US foreign students can go on mini-trips to Canada so I'm hoping that Russia is the same way but alas I'm clueless. It would be nice to visit other European counties during breaks and see friends.

No, usually they give single entry unfortunately. However, student visas are quite strange in the way, that you can get one, come to Russia, then tell your institution you want to leave and they put some stamp on your visa that you can leave and enter again. So, your limitation is that you have to tell your school in Russia when you leave, for how long, and where, but then you can actually do it. At least it was like this before.
