The book on Russia I'm reading, it briefly talked about this family and how they were executed. That was really merciless how they were just executed.

It was quite merciless! They executed the Romanov children. What book are you reading, YG?

Quite basic I think but it was one of the first ones I came across at my local library. 20th Century Russia by Robert Service.

Another one was reccommended by Russki but it only comes in Russian unfortunately. I picked up another one on the Ukraine at U of T library. Reads a bit like a text book but I'm enjoying it.

Cool. I will have to see if my library has a copy of it.

Are you a student at the U of T? Or can anyone check out books from there?

I am a "mature" student. I am trying to return to school having graduated from high school some 25 years ago now. Yep, mature is me! LOL
I'm taking what is called an Academic Bridging course this fall and winter.
If I pass I can start university as a 1st year student next fall, 2008.
Take me some time to get a degree but hey, it's the process I like, the going back to class, having classmates, the social part of it.

My Dad is a "mature" student. What are you looking to get your degree in?

I can't wait until I go to college...I hope it's more exciting than high school. Pray

The tzars were tyrants. You can feel sorry for the children, but not for their reign being ended. Freaky to realise they're related to my country's royal family.

But I thought that the last Tzsar was actually going to give more back to the people...but that he was killed before he could implement actions to do so

Russia had been slowly transforming from a feudal system (still in place early 19th century) to a more modern agrarian society, but I doubt any measure by the Tzars would have been enough to ward off what has finally happened to them. The class differences were too big. I don't think anyone of the 'working classes' cared about his death in that time.

That's what happens when the 'working class' gets tired of the privileged people running the country.

Yes, big, big, differences!
I'm going over my book again, taking notes to try and grasp some facts.
The gap between peasantry/workers versus the elite was huge!

Since I've been on this site, I'm really enjoying reading and talking about Russian/Soviet happenings. There are a few Russian study courses at U of T so maybe I will go that direction.

High school, well 20 something years ago, was boring but I went to the wrong school! Laughing

I went to the closest school, 3 blocks from home, which wasn't smart as it was a technical school. If I wanted to fix cars, that was the school for me.
Can't change a tire even now!

Oh well, education isn't a waste but I sure shootin would try to direct my kids (if I had any) to get a good education, to help get them a job but to also open their minds, to see the world beyond the small area they actually live in.
