Yeah I think Russian is harder than English...and although some might not agree I think English is the easiest language to learn, for example you don't have to worry about feminin and male forms, cause in russian even nouns are either male or female...like zhopa (ass) is female (I wonder why Razz), while stol(table) is male etc.

Does anyone have recommendations for learning Russian through books. Not interested in tapes or programs. Intent on being proficient rather than just knowledge of phrases.

gopniki is just a term Smile

you should read Chekhov and some of russian classic writers cause they write their novels in pure russian language.

Sorry I edit the swear word.
I thought the worst thing you can to a Russian is "Are you a uzbek?"

I think all Russian are proud to be Russian and they do not want to confused with backward country that has migrant workers that who live illegally and live in poor conditions.

Same in Canada, we ask people from Ontario if they are from Newfoundland or what Indian reserve are you from. They get mad.

Nationalism, how do you define yourself ?
If you ask someone from my country what nationality they are, only 25% will say Canadian. Canada has no nationality. You do , therefore you are nationalistic to me and so is most of rest of the world. That is why I like living here, because we are TRUE MULTICULTURAL. Last Friday, I have spoken to Russian, Iranians, Croatians, Sikhs, Romanians, English, Austrilians, and Pakistanies, in Moscow I saw three black people, no chinese, and no east indians. Canadians are only nationalistic during sporting events and when Americans are around. But we do not suffer from hate that you two countries get, but we do not get the benefits either. In my section of the city, there is not Canadian flag flown, but there is two American and one Russia. Are you Nationalist? For me Yes.

BTW if you asked me what Nationality I am I would say 1/2 Scottish 1/4 English and 1/4 Irish, not Canadian. Giving up citizenship is not a big deal.
