My husband was really shocked when he found out about the custom of having baby showers before the baby is born. One of the reasons is that as mentioned before, Russians tend to be superstitious and believe that having such a lavish affair before the birth of the child may bring bad luck. I know my husband does not like to talk about something in a positive way until it happens, for fear of jinxing it.

I don't really agree with the whole thing of bridal showers and wedding showers and baby showers. It seems like a way for people to try to get as much material goods from others, rather than celebrating the occasion for what is really is.

But I guess I"m not like most people. We got married by a JP and relished in the fact that we saved lots of money doing it that way!

It is clearly understandable if a Russian women don't want to bare children with their husbands if they cheat. To me a man shows this as being a coward. Who wants this??? Isn't it true that Russian men do not have to pay child support if they leave their wives for a prettier woman? I assume alcohol is a key factor in the childless marriages over there. Maybe Russian women are smart not to allow themselves to get caught up in that life. Things change over decades of being put second. It seems this takes precedence over everything else in Russia.

Ex pat, Russia had been talked about having the best resources in the world and is now considered to be the wealthiest country as well. I have not been to Russia but it shows that Russia clearly has more going for them than just food.

I agree about the baby shower. I rather wait until afterwards then have a baby shower. It would be terrible to buy all girl things then end up with a boy. That hurts the pocket. This happen to my friend. Her sonogram showed she was having a girl and when she gave birth it was a boy. I am superstitious as well and would rather wait until for sure the baby makes it and comes out the sex that the doctor said. I wouldn't want to " count my chickens before they hatch."

While there is a lot of drinking here, it is greatly overblown by Western prudes and media. My own drinking habits qualify me as an alcoholic according to the AMA nowadays, though I only have three or four beers or some wine each day.
I suspect one of the reasons for the declining birth rate is freedom -- freedom to not get pregnant and freedom from what most would consider the drudgery of everyday life here.
As my wife wistfully noted as we left the US -- she sure does miss the "convenience food" of the US. When I pointed out that we weren't in the habit of buying "convenience food," she reminded me that ground meat is a convenience food in Russia.
Well, got to get back to the hand-powered meat grinder -- we're having hamburgers tonight!

hmmm well...never really had experience with baby showers...and your all's points are very valid. But on the other hand babyshowers help to prepare and and I guess it's a lot of schooling for the Moms to be. Women need weddings...I think they are important. Well Not sure on the wedding showers too...maybe all this is a way for consumerism to get our money? Or it's another reason to Party! Or actually yes what happens when you go through all this and things don't work out as planned...Hmmmm Geeze life is such a gamble!

Charles --
Out of my 60 years, I probably spent 40 in the US (a native Texan). My current wife (2 previous) is from Russia and we were in the states for five years -- waiting on her citizenship and the birth of our son.
Now, we're here so he can learn Russian and get a good education.

I see pregnant women in Metro tunnels holding signs. Anyone know why the women are doing that? Advertising for a father/ husband/ anyone who will help take care of them and their baby? Some of them look near tears.

Those Russian women need to come here to America and get some help.
They would get all the help they need until they got on their feet. What a terrible shame... Sad
