The customs office where you can extend the 10 working day temporary import certificate for a foreign registered vehicle has CHANGED in MOSCOW. It is now located at the BUTOVSKI TAMOZHNIYA PUNKT at KILOMETRE 26 of the WARSHAWSKE SCHOSSE - thats outside the MKAD by around 5 kilometres. Going out from Moscow the office is on the right hand side on the territory of a company called SOVTRANSAVTOEXPEDITIA (or something like that) There is a nice large white sign in Russian at the turning point.
The good news is that the whole process is now much much easier and took me only 1 hour and cost me 410RBL for forms, duties and "services" and another 250RBL for photocopies. All in between GBP10 to GBP20. Strictly the duty of RBL100 has to be paid at SBERBANK but they don't have one there. If you persist then they might let you go and see someone in one of their offices who will give you a receipt for RBL100 in return for 400RBL cash. This is what we did.
There is no vehicle inspection now but check the form to ensure they get the reg no and VIN no correct. They stuffed mine up. However this was not a problem at the border on the return trip because the number on the paper was the reg document no not the reg no of the vehicle. They took photocopies of the reg document and that was that.
And finally, we got the certificate extending the temporary import AFTER the closing time of 5pm (5.30pm in fact).
So a big thumbs up to Russian Customs on this. In 2005 I spend a whole afternoon at the customs and paid over GBP40. Things are getting better.
Rgds

The advice regarding the location of the customs office in Moscow for extending the temporary import certificate is wrong!
1 I posted in the Transport Forum
2 I posted in the WTR Feedback Forum
3 I PM'd one of the moderators
After 40 days plus the advice has still not been changed. This summer I wasted 3 hours in Moscow traffic because this advice was and is wrong. Can someone get up off their @ss and update the information. I try to help fellow motorists FOR FREE and because I like travelling to Russia. What about you?
So, WTR, WTF is going on?
Yours in frustration.

Dittrich,
I wanted to ask you: did you have to translate your car's documents into Russian before you traveled there? Or they accepted the originals? |

Unless they changed it yet again (it was changed to km26 warshawske shosse in February 2007 I was told) then yes it is the correct address. The location is difficult to miss if you can read russian - else you might have to ask.

I pm'd you with the answer but basically, because I can speak russian, I just translated the UK document "V5C" there and then verbally and pointed out the information they needed on the form - so they accepted the originals. No certified translations needed.
The only people who refused to accept the originals in my experience would be a russian insurance company trying to avoid you registering a claim!
There were around 10 cars there when I arrived so they must see reg documents from all over the place. The process would be daunting if you don't speak russian - take a russian speaker.
