|
|
I have sent ten separate letters and cards to an orphan in Nyagan at a rate of one per week beginning in late September. To date, she has received NONE OF THEM! I understand that the postal system was closed for a week in October to celebrate the revolution and that it will be closed for 10 days in January to celebrate the new year. Should this have affected mail delivery in such as major way? BTW, my brother in law has sent several letters and cards to an orphan he is adopting and she has received all of them. I am beginning to suspect that someone is intercepting my child's mail. Are there other options to get mail to this child? Is there a courier service that will deliver directly to her hands and signature? I'm very disappointed and at my wit's end here. At least I've spoken with the child several times by phone, so t least she knows we exist and that we are planning to come for her. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. |

| Russian state mail service works by its own rules that defy explanations. |

When you run into problems with mail in Russia, you may be able to get around it by using USPS International Express Mail (in the UK Royal Mail's Iternational Datapost). These are the postal "courier" service that competes with Fedex and UPS and DHL. However, since it is the post office, they go to more places in every country. In Russia, these parcels would be delivered by EMS Garantpost which uses separate sorting stations and delivery personnel from the regular post office. There is probably someone in or near Nyagan who is opening all foreign mail looking for cash. Using EMS Garantpost will bypass this hurdle, however using registered mail will not bypass it.
I don't know how big Nyagan is but I've used EMS Garantpost delivery several times to a small town of 50,000 in the mountains in Chelyabinsk Oblast. Each time it took less than 10 days from London England which I consider pretty good time to western Siberia. Send her some kind of gift along with copies of all the letters. I suggest one of those stuffed animals that zips open and turns into a puppet or a bag or whatever. That way you can put some of those christmas chocolate balls inside, the ones that are plain chocolate covered in red and green foil. Then on the phone you can verify that she really got the present because it is so unusual and anyone who meddles with the parcels is unlikely to notice that the animal is stuffed with chocolates. Ask her what was in the parcel. If she only mentions the toy, ask if she opened the zipper. |

That is an excellent suggestion. I will try it. We are also trying to enclose mail and pictures for her in a leeter to another child who is her best friend and is being adopted by my brother in law. Another route is asap.ru, a floral and gift site I discovered that delivers in the town where the children are. They send a photo of the child with the gift as verification of its delivery. Thanks again DennisF |

I finally got tired of the "intercept and withhold" routine at the orphanage, so I sent a fruit basket to Olga as mentioned above. All the kids say fruit is their favorite food (maybe because they get much of it). Today I received the photo verificaton that it was delivered. Olga looks beautiful in the picture. Someone obviously posed the picture and told her to wave and blow a kiss. That's ok with me, I feel better just seeing her. We also sent some photos of us to her best friend so she might possibly get them. Still waiting to go to Russia... DennisF |
