would anyone happen to know what happens in the following situation:
i currently have a 1-year, emergency (american) passport, with a multi-entry business visa in it that is good until the end of february. i need to get a new, permanent u.s. passport. does anyone know whether my current visa can or will be transferred onto my new passport, or will i need to get a new visa, even if the current is still valid for months after i receive my new passport?

You will make application for a new passport which is currently taking 8-10 weeks. New US passports can no longer be created in foreign countries, they all come from the US. So you may need to add a couple weeks for transit to the 8-10 weeks if you are in Russia.
So in your case it is a moot point. By the time you get your new passport, your Russian visa will be right up on expiration anyway.
In any case, a new passport would indeed require a new visa. No visa would be removed from an old passport and reinstalled in a new passport. Doesn't happen. |

I recently renewed my passport because the last one was damaged (went through the wash) - I received a new passport in four business days. No kidding - yes, I paid the rush fee. US passport.
My understanding is that the visa will not be transferred to a new passport and it expires when the passport expires. You probably got the visa because it was an emergency/temp passport - most consulates will not issue a visa with a travel through date later than the passport expiration. |

That is great news Dan...because I need to renew my passport...it expires in Feb and I am planning to go to the Ukraine end of Dec. So I hope I can get it back in time. I will submit the old one next week. I think the expedited cost is like $127.00 |

yeah, something like that. i'm gonna apply for visas for Russia & China next week for a Dec 28th departure. Gonna do New Years in Red Square. They're pretty fast with visas at this time of the year...

| Yes the tourist visa takes like 11 days...and because you already had a visa...makes it easier to get a new one |
