An interesting piece. One has to wonder where all this nationalism will lead Russia in the next 10 years or so.

Interesting article, I can't believe that they would close down so many British embassies. Xenophobia is sure on the rise there. Shocked

There is a lot of truth to the article...

Quote:
What is clear is that Russia is in a deep funk about its position in the world. It is a huge country with an equally large inferiority complex.

In the 1990s it lost an empire, and with it, the respect and prestige it feels it deserves.

It blames the West and particularly America and Britain.

Russia needs to snap out of it and change it's attitude...the fact is it will lose even more on the path it is going...Russia has always been a very self destructive country

Yeah, they close those British Consulates, and they are right to do so! Britain protects terrorists like Zakaev, thievs like Berezovsky, and whatever other scum could escape Russia. Plus those British Consulates are trying to spread English language and feed their literature to Russian youth! They are trying to destroy the Russian language! You know I sometimes already see in commercials on Russian TV: "Хочеш драйва?"... "Do you want "drive"?" (Meaning do you want to feel anxiety, or excitement?") WTF? "Drive" isn't even a Russian word, douchebags! In Russian, it's called "возбуждение". See, they teach kids this gabage, and then wonder, how come, when they are at an age when they must join the Armed Forces, every forth can't write properly?! It's disturbing, really. Evil or Very Mad

You know, in the Soviet Union, no other language, besides Russian was allowed on TV. Besides, of course, in some Republics, like in Georgia, of course, Vakhtang Kikabidze was allowed to sing in Georgian. But those wre the Soviet languages. No problem there. But this mix in of English words. That would never happen. The Party always said: "The Russian language shall not be poisoned by slang, foreign terms, and other, ugly rubbish!". That is one of the good things about USSR. Language was sacred.

Hmm.....I was of the understanding that Russians appreciated fine literature no matter where it came from? Destroying the Russian language? Pray tell, how would that be attempted?

For those of us that are Cyrillic challenged, what would be the closest English translation of that word?

You are beginning to sound more and more American my friend. Strange that we have those that express the same opinion about English here in the US. Now, while I am a proponent that English competency should be required, I would stop short of making it the "official" language of the US.

........there are some that thought the bread lines were good too, as it made for a communal experience.........(tongue bolted firmly in cheek.)

Russia needs to understand that like it or not, English is generally accepted as the one common language on this planet. It is the language of business, of air traffic control, and of many other ventures. No one is saying that Russia need give up its cultural identity, or its attachment to its language. but, Russia needs to give some if it wants to compete on the wold stage, and not just be viewed as another backwards, jingoistic society with a good dose of xenophobia thrown in.

What about them?

Возбуждение means excitement, thrill, sexual arousal. What is the connection to any of these, in the words that you posted?

Sexual arousal = Сексуальное пробуждение. Not quite the same as Возбуждение. Or is your mind in the gutter, yet again?
You'd have to go back, and read the paragraph he used the word in. Did you try that? Here, let me help you.

Did you get my point, or did that go by you, as well? I'm sorry, but I'm not some young girl, who's going to fluster at your rude remarks. I'm surprised that a lawyer doesn't have the ability to read between the lines, after all, you make a living out of word games, don't you?

You must be referring to this bit.

But it still doesn't explain the connection that you are trying to establish.

Yes, I can see that.

It was a sarcastic remark. Mate, I hope this isn't indicative of all our future conversations. He was saying that English people are trying to destroy the Russian language. Hence, my sarcastic remark about tolerance, acceptance, etc.
And yes, I've noticed the copious amounts of grammatical and spelling errors, no need to draw attention to them.

Now you are gong to start teaching me Russian? With the assistance of a web translator. Interesting.

It's a rather telling reflection on you, by the way, that you associate any mention of sex with the gutter. Sad.

My bad. Please show me the words, "Sexual arousal", in cyrillic, if you would? All Russki said was "excitement". It was you who said it meant sexual arousal. Who's mind is in the gutter?????
