|
|
This autumn I (an EU national) applied for a one year visa and received one with the "valid only for 90 days out of every 180 days", meaning I can't stay an entire year on it in Russia. My first 90 day period will be running out in January.
I've decided to try to leave Russia, cancel my one-year visa and apply for a new three-month visa that hopefully will allow me to immediately return to Russia and continue my stay, instead of having to leave for three months (and cancel my accomodation and everything else).
I haven't been able to confirm this will work (consulates either hard to contact, don't understand my question or not willing/able to elaborate). But at least my usually knowledgable home country visa agency said it was possible to cancel a previous visa.
I hope the consulates won't care too much about the 90/180 day rule, and therefore won't mind issuing me a three-month visa valid immediately after just having left Russia. One risk is of course that they frown upon people constantly applying for new shorter term visas -- I don't know what the policy is on this. I suppose they could suddenly question the purpose of constantly returning on new visas. |

| The more often you apply for a visa, the more often you have to pay the Russian Consulate's visa fee. Sounds like more money to me if they're making a profit on visas. Just a guess. |

Thomas, I believe I sort of outlined this problem for you here in another post you put up: http://www.waytorussia.net/TalkLounge/conversation10008.html
No matter what kind of restriction is--or isn't--printed on your visa, the bottom line is that there is a new Russian law that stipulates a holder of a 1 year multiple entry business visa may remain in Russia for 90 out of every 180 days.
How this might apply to a series of 3 month business visas remains unclear. I think that would be a very risky strategy.
As I said before, on your first 3 months in Russia you need to get moving on that work permit and work visa. It's your best bet. |

| Yeah, as OE says, it's a new law. At the end of the day it appears that the Russians (man, does that evoke memories of the cold war... "the Russians"...!) are cracking down on folks that want to stay/live/work in Russia for extended periods. The average tourist isn't going to be bothered too much by the 90/180 rule as he isn't going to want to stay that long. The folks with wanderlust are going to be impacted... and that sucks. As I'm one of them. |

| This should not a problem for me. I have a work permit in process and hope to have my documents sorted in the next week. I was just curious to hear about "dambrew's" attempt at a work-a-round to the system. |
