If you ever can you've got to attend at least one!
Or as next best thing get the DVD of a friend!!!
Absolutely brilliant.
I didn't get anything first time, at some point I thought that it was more like a divorce party, but boy it was fun to watch!
I've witnessed drunken "brawls" & catfights on the street near the river in SpB where the wedding photographs were taken...(before the actual party started) Hilarious!!!
Some people also have a wicked sense of fashion on these weddings....
It's fun! |

|
|
I know that homosexuality ceased to be a crime in Russia only over a decade or so ago, and I was just wondering how Russians view homosexuality and homosexual practices in general? The reason I ask is that recently I spoke with a Russian couple casually. I mentioned that I was sad I couldn't marry my girlfriend (I am a woman myself) in our country or hers. Previously I mentioned a male Serbian friend. This couple asked me what my Serbian friend thought of me wanting to marry my girl. That got me defensive and I asked "Why, does it bother you that lesbians want to get married?"
They apologized for the question, and the Russian woman said that "No, but my husband would have questions if I want to marry another girl." I, too, apologized, citing a previous bad experience with a good friend as reason for my defensiveness.
That just got me into thinking. While in some countries (Italy, America, Philippines), I mention these countries because I have friends and lived there for some time. Anyway, in some countries same sex marriage is an issue that is considered worthy of discussion. In Italy, for instance, it is not so much a religious or cultural opposition, but more of an economic limitation (tax cuts and benefits for same sex couples just means more financial burden to government). But it is recognized that gays have a valid desire for wanting to be legally united.
How is the present view of homosexuality and same sex unions in Russia? I imagine it is different in St. Petersburg or Moscow or bigger cities, as opposed to villages and smaller cities. But I specifically want to know the average Russian's view.
In the previous pages, I came across an answer confirming that homophobia in males exist. I have visited Serbia, I personally know some Serbians, and I know that they do not allow gay parades. I do know that Serbians aren't Russians, but I was just thinking of old USSR and maybe some similarities still exist. Any attempts to have these gay events are still squished, so to speak. Gays are not as heard as, say, in other Western countries like Belgium, etc.
I haven't read anything about lesbians, though. Are females as homophobic as the males? I noticed the preponderance of lesbian Russian nude photos, but I know that these are geared more towards the male taste of seeing two women together. I know Tatu, the faux lesbian pop duo is just hype. I think one of them got pregnant.
How are lesbians treated in Russia? Are they mostly out? What about bisexual women? Is lesbian chic present in Russian culture (i.e. women being open about lesbian relationships because it is cool)? Or are they more traditional and regard it as a deviant sexual behavior?
I wonder. Hope someone answers. |

I've got an exceptionally odd (yet practical) question for the women...
When I went to Italy, it was difficult to find razors and shaving cream b/c the women in Italy (at least in Torino) either waxed or were natural, so my question is, should I prepare for the same in Russia? I prefer to wax, of course, but it gets to be expensive, so I'd like to have a razor and shaving cream available to me if possible. I'll be in Piter for at least 3 months.
sorry for the strange question, but this topic says I can ask anything. :p |

I am not Russian. I live in Rome with my gf though I am originally from Manila. But I think I can answer your question.
It's not true that you can't find razors in Torino, nor in any Italian city. Were you looking specifically for women's razors? Because men's Gillette razors and shaving creams exist in Italy, America, and Russia. All men shave, even Russians and Italians, so you can certainly find them in any grocery store, big or small. I also go to the waxer, but for emergencies and quick needs (you have to schedule with a waxer), you always have to have a razor handy. Just go to any grocery store. |

Obviously all men shave... I'd definitely at least prefer women's shaving cream. Men's shaving cream is always fragranced with some sort of cologne and I'd really rather not smell like a man. :p
thanks for offering help, though |

You are not allergic to hair removers, are you? Why not take a few bottles of Nair cream with aloe/lanolin. This is a mild hair remover. Aloe/lanolin is the best. It's just like putting lotion on your legs, that's all. I think you can take it on the plane as long as it is not open and with a receipt. I used it, this last for a week without shaving and it doesn't burn, makes your legs soft. A bottle of Nair last a long time..the only inconvenience about it is that you have to wait 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing it off...this would be a better alternative than worrying if there is women's razors where you are going, no doubt they will be rough razors..I think most Russian women wax and that can be expensive..Nair last for a week on the legs and you won't have little dry patches like razors give you. Just a suggestion...

I do not know about lesbians I tell you about gays. I give you typical view of average Russian.
// typical view begin
Homosexual practices is perversion. Homosexual males does not count as mens. Usual men despise them and perceive them with disgust. Some with agression. Refuse to handshake with a gay perceived as normal behavour as if gay is dirty or infected, while refuse to handshake with a straight man typically will be perceived as insult or demonstration of ignorance. They not deserved any special treatment like allowance to marriage, or right to make gay parades. Any public events which include demonstration (even declaration) of homosexuality harmful to moral and dangerous to moral of children and teens. Any straight man who protects their interests does it either for own PR or he is the gay/latent gay.
Some people offer to allow gay parades only if they will be at the Day of Commandos or at the Day of Marines, etc. There are at these days many retired commandos on the streets in drunk state.
In short: let they f**k themselves in the a*s in their private apartaments, but do not make it on the public.
// typical view end
Yes most Russian men are homophobic and they think it is normal and right behaviour. |

I use Gillette lemon scented shaving cream when I have to shave. It's really not masculine at all, although I don't mind those male scents (it's pleasant to me). As for razors, I think those overpriced Mach3 and Sensor Excels do a good job as opposed to women's Gillette Daisy. There are also Sensor Excels for women (colored green), with aloe and all that stuff.
Jojo also brought a good point about Nair and maybe Veet, Sally Hansen products. There are so many. But really, razors and neutral-smelling creams should all be available in grocery stores. It's not a problem to get them anywhere in the world. |

Hmm, okay, follow up question. Does it mean when I go to Moscow with my friends, I need to stay in the closet and pretend to be straight? I generally don't really display public signs of affection towards my girlfriend, but sometimes she kisses me on the lips lightly. Or she hugs me. We should avoid these things, you mean? How do men see lesbians in Russia? Since you say you cannot speak for lesbians/women in Russia, I ask about men in general and how they view lesbians. Do you subscribe to the belief that lesbians aren't having "real" sex? Would you shake my hand? Am I "infected?" |

I do not think you should strictly avoid this. Moscow people is enough tolerant to such things. Nobody will stop you or offend in any way, but demonstration of homosexual attitudes may bring unpleasant looks at you.

I think they prefer to ignore them.

If they are beautiful, undesirable loss for men. If they aren't they does not worth to think about them.

I do not know such belief. If it include physical contact it real.
| sphygmo wrote: | | Would you shake my hand? Am I "infected? | No. Handshake is for men only or for businness/diplomatic partners. Men greet women by kiss of a hand or a cheek or simply vocal greeting. Most likey last will be enough. |

Oh! No cheek to cheek greeting? In Serbia, we kiss three times. It's the norm. I know Russia isn't Serbia, but I imagined some form of kiss was normal. In Italy it's two times on cheeks. And in Manila, depends.
I am talking about friends. Not diplomatic acquaintances. |

I saw at least 2 stores in Moscow near Metro stations, that sell cosmetics and toiletries. Every time I walked by one of these stores, women were going in or coming out of the store. I entered one store to see what the 'demand' was all about. The store sold shampoo, razors and blades, soap, deoderant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, mouthwash, skin lotion, laundry detergent, perfume, etc., practically anything in the cosmetic/ toiletries catagory a woman would want. Ask around and someone should be able to direct you to a nearby store of this type.
