Yes I am going to try to...but after Kiev...I plan to come back to Odessa and then perhaps go up to Lviv...we shall see...I'm pretty casual about everything...really just relaxing day to day...no time schedules etc. Just going with the flow. But being from San Diego...ahhh...the winter weather... |

Don't offend her. Don't say anything offensive about Russia or the Soviet Union, or the history of the country. (If you're a fan of Faulty Towers, remmeber - "Don't mention the war!").
Never try to show that you are superior to her, don't patronize her. If she is mature, she is propably WELL educated and intelligent, not a half-imbecille redneck (sorry to all rednecks!).
Respect her! Respect her background! Treat her as a woman! She maybe not expects you to do it (as she may not know your habits), but bring her flowers, complement her, open doors for her, pull out the chair for her - GIVE HER 200% OF YOUR ATTENTION!!!!
And please do this even if it normally isn't your style.
If you want to ask something that you believe can be offensive, tell her that you know sooo little and have a question that may be offensive, but "you have no clue ..., is it OK to ask this question??". |

That's pretty good advice for just about any woman of any age, I would say. |

| Back in the 70's and 80's in Sweden when women were LIBERATED, it was an offence to open a door for a woman or give your seat on the bus to a woman. |

My wife said something yesterday: Russians consider their internal affairs to be their and their's only affairs. They don't like outsiders comment on Russian politics, so avoid that subject.
(Don't mention the war) |

I meant, tread gently, if you are interested to know more about Russian politics - internal and foreign.
When I am out and about I always ask a lot of people a lot of questions, but I try to show that I am absolutely lacking any information and just want to be briefed, informed and updated.
To take an example:
Starting a date by asking the woman what she thinks about Putin supporting the terrorists in Iran, is no good idea. If you're interested in that subject, ask if the press/TV say anything about any bilateral programs between Iran and Russia. And add that you her so many rumours you suspect is without ground.
But I would start the conversation by looking her deeply in her eyes and tell her that she surely is one of the most beautiful woman you've ever met.
(OT: In a Swedish comedic theatre a shy guy was proposed to say to his date "When I look at you I cannot eat I cannot drink". But the guy lost the line and said "When I look at you I loose my appetite".) |

Yes, I met her and was asking after the fact, in case I see her again so I know what NOT to do!
I met her a couple of weeks ago and was very very careful about my manners and things she and I talked about. I was a little nervous, but I behaved like I was talking with a Diplomat. ha.
I think she liked me, she kept saying how nice I was. She could tell I had a slight accent so we talked of my ancestry a little, and she seemed to be pleasantly surprised. ha, I think that's good??? |

Let's not exaggerate. If you are talking to bright, educated people, it's OK to ask direct and honest questions and express your views. I guess if you just start criticizing Russia, one stupid pride may manifest itself and then the person would feel bad and would get very defensive and angry. But that's the case with anybody. If you meet someone who lives in the South and start saying how all people from the South are rednecks and stupid, that person would get defensive. It's common sense. |
