Can anyone give me some info on the best way to get to The Chuvash region? In particular, Cheboksary. Any ideas of a estimated return air fare from the UK? Does it have an airport? If not where's the nearest airport? Is there a reliable train service? Is it feasible to drive from Europe? Thanks!

Btw, what do you want in Chuvash republic? This is quite boring place anyway

My company has various engineering contracts throughout Russia, Eastern Europe and the Baltic states and I was offered work in the Chuvash region. There is a Hydro-Electric plant in Cheboksary that I may be sent to survey so I just wondered what the region was like. I can find lots of info on the internet etc but it's always better to hear from people whio have first hand experience. You say it's quite boring! So I take it the nightlife etc is not up to much? Is it full of mafia etc? If I go, there will be a team of approx 6 of us and we would like to know more about the region before accepting the placement. I wondered what the transport system was like, state of the roads etc as I would like to either take my own car or rent one and do some exploring. Not really into the Russian dating game as such but being a red blooded male etc....when in Rome etc. Any more info on the region appreciated! Thanks!

And about mafia: it's a stereotype that Russia is packed with mafia so you shouldn't be afraid. Just prepare to be surprising for people cause foreigners can be hardly met there. And I suppose it would be problems with english language so it would be dificult to communicate with majority of people. English is very popular among young people espescially students. Also I advice you to learn cyrrilic alphebet, it will help you very much. And about roads: they are acceptable not everywhere but still road system is good. Culture of driving is not as careful as in Europe but it's not very terrible If you are stopped by the police don't worry. Maybe they just want to check your documents. And bribes to police oficer is not an outstanding thing Good luck!

That's been a great help.. (love the dog with the sunglasses!) I know the Mafia thing is a bit of a myth. I was told by some people that a lot of the smaller regions and town outside Moscow were rife with mafia drugs prostiution etc.. Some people are just so full of BS! Anyway. Thanks for the help!

I may go there for a few days soon if I can get in touch with my friend Marina. It is a 30 dollar overnight train journey from Moscow.

There are several nice hotels there - the Chuvashia is the most central and modern; it has internet access and nice, refurbished rooms. I stayed at Rossiya, which is owned by the same people and undergoing a capital-intensive rennovation. My room was great except for the thing that held the shower head to the wall, which was loose and ill-fitted. A one-bed, one person room cost 620 rubles (about 22 dollars) for the night. The all-you can eat breakfast that they offer for 80 rubles features mostly continental food, so don't expect bacon and fried eggs. Both hotels are big and feature a bar/restaurant. A meal at the bar/restaurant during the night when they had music and dancing was 250 rubles (9 bucks) for a big plate of food and 2 beers - this included 100 rubles as a cover fee for the entertainment. Taxis are all about 50-60 rubles within the city limits (2 dollars) but you can also call a cab service that will take you somewhere for 40 rubles. Busses are a mere 4.5 rubles and private mini-busses (marshutki) 10 rubles. There is a Sanatorium (vacation resort hotel) near the city - www.sanatory-chuvashia.ru - but I was not there. You can get a room with three free meals a day there for 750 rubles. Internet access is available at internet cafes throughout the city. There is a McDonalds and all three major Russian GSM cellular phone operators (MTS, Beeline, Megafon) operate there. Beeline is the most expensive and has the best quality, whereas Megafon is cheap and least reliable. There is a hotel called 'Sport' where an un-rennovated room costs 400 rubles a night with a shared bath (nobody took the other room) - one of the staff speaks English. Meals usually range in cost from 80-150 rubles. There is only one train every day between Moscow and Chebokshary - the train to Chebokshary leaves at 8:45 pm and arrives the following day at 9:07 AM. A berth in a 4-berth second-class compartment costs 1080 rubles.
