..hello gentlemen, if what you say of today's Russia is true, (and I have to go there too at some point..my sister went but not I), then it really is a shame and a great loss of the more "humane" traits that we love about a country's people. I guess I'm one of those who's old fashioned: I do cook from scratch like my mother, and I also view it as a way of expressing love for...for example the man in my life. When it's just me, yea I still cook from scratch about 85% of the time. I so so hate modern views of deception, greed, arrogance...it's never pleasant to see things you really love about your own heritage turn to these modern traits. Even in my current relationship, I'm still not sure if my boyfriend is really being honest about his values and what he really likes about my values or in reality is someone who's more into the modern Russian attitude you are seeing. Sorry, I just had a bad day...I'll go back to the Russian Women forum. 
Somehow, some people I'm sure will also see what changes you describe and revert to the more traditional ways...I hope. |

I find the men have held on the old ways more so than the women.
But the women, I am not just talking about cooking and such, but it is the greed that has entered the system
I walked in a plumbing store and saw plumbing equipment that you would never see at a normal high end middle class family in the USA, because of the cost. But in city that the average salary was 300 a month, there it was. Before Russian people cared about each other more, now they will fuck each over to get a better car or better tub with jets on it. It is so bad, they sell women to other countries and the government puts a blind eye to it as long as they earn a profit. |

During our 5-week stay in Ufa last Spring we looked in every possible shop and market searching for a Pelmenitsa (for making pelmeni) and for a special iron for cooking Kuritsa Tabaka (Chicken Tabaka - the chicken is fried under heavy pressure). Found nothing but a lot of top-of-the-class Espresso-machines and blenders ...
The pelmenitsa, however we did find in Ravenna, Italy.  |

Do you mean one of those metal disks with lots of holes in it?
One of my brothers bought one back in the mid '80's, it had the price stamped into the metal in rubles and kopeks. They used it a few times and decided that the pelmeni were nicer made the traditional way, ie get a few people around the table and get to work.
I have never seen one in Russia, either for sale or in use. |

Well, that's the mainstream Kremlin media thrust over the last 7 or so years.
However, you do realise the "Oligarchs" are still dominant now as back in the 1990s? Many of these characters now also have important political posts. However, we're just talking about the Oligarchs who were smart enough to be politically onside with Putin. |

Perhaps.....Maybe the Jason Bourne series would seem boring after such a movie endeavour?
One could suppose if Khordovsky didn't have any political ambitions + did not fund any political opposition to Putin, he would have had such a relaxing life these days, managing an English football team, being a space tourist in the Russian space program, or simply throwing huge parties every once in a while? Who knows?
Even so, most Russians I've encountered are content with (or, accepting of) Putin. They've had far worse. Of course Putin's road was initially rocky (eg. in 2000), but, as soon as he reigned in the mainstream media, the negative reporting stopped, and he has done no wrong for years.
If not shrewd, Putin's been very fortunate too, with export oil-prices increasing 6-fold during his tenure. Superficially, the jewels of St Petersburg and Moscow have thus benefitted greatly. There has also been some government financial trickle into the provinces.
However, unfortunately, cost of living increases at a too high rate across the country. So much more needs to happen of course, to further improve Russians' quality of life. Perhaps Putin's team really will achieve what's needed over the next decade or two? But, will Government go against historical precedent, and really be a friend of the Russian people? |

Don't you know that true pelmeni actually hand made food? Those who has sent you to search Pelmennitsa probably well laughed.
