Hello everyone. I've made a few posts already, but this is the first chance I've had to sit down and make an introduction.
My name is Rob, and I live in Tennessee, USA. I began self-study Russian a few months ago. I'm progressing slowly but steadily.
I first became interested in Russia several years ago when I watched a documentary on the trans-siberian railway. It was a travel diary about a man who took the train across the country during winter. Ever since then I've wanted to take the trip myself. My good friend and I now have plans to travel from Moscow to Beijing in September of 2009.
I decided if I was going to travel across the country, then it may be a good idea to actually learn the language. I love Russian. Once I start reading the study guide, I can hardly put it down. Though, I do have to go back over the same chapter several times before I finally "get it". I also use audio CDs and various websites. However, I know nothing can substitute conversing with someone else who can speak the language.
I hope to eventually become fluent in the language. However, having no one else who speaks Russian to converse with, this goal may be difficult. As much as I love learning about Russia and studying the language, I can't say that I've ever meet anyone else who can speak it. Are there any Russians in the entire state of Tennessee? (I'm kidding. I'm sure there are, I've just never met any).
To sum up I'll just say that I love this site. It has a wealth of information about Russia that none of the similar sites have. I especially enjoy the street interviews and would like to see more. It would also be nice if the forum were a bit more active. I understand some posters were recently banned, which may account for the slow down.
Anyway, that is just a little about me and my interest in Russia and its language. I'm looking forward to being part of the community. Feel free to ask me any questions, as I'm sure I'll have many myself.
спасибо,
Rob

Go to a website called Masterrussian.com
There is a section in which you can find a penpal who wants to learn English and they will help you learn Russian. Many of them have Skype, ICQ or Yahoo messenger in which you can speak over the internet to help each other.
You may find that you will have many friends to meet on the way and have a fine family meal and treated as a guest than just a tourist.

I find outside the commercial interest (tourist agencies and such), that if you meet many nice people.

Thanks for the info, Paul. I had actually registered at masterrussian.com back when I first started learning Russian (last summer). However, I kept having problems with their messaging system. I'll check it out again to see if it's any better.
Like I said, I love learning Russian, but being able to speak with someone would make this process so much easier, I think.
