When I got married, the only documents needed was an ID (a passport is great for that) and a document signed and sealed by (Swedish) officials, showing I wasn't already married. Just in case I had the document translated to Rusian with a sign/seal from Notary Public. Maybe a sign/seal from a Russian consulate is required.
Check with your local consulate, just in case.
And be prepared that many get married over there, so make a booking at the local ZAGS in time.

Ok, with the Fiance Visa program, why marry in Russia? Because if you marry in Russia, then it complicates her to come the USA.

I would suggest marry legally in the USA, but marry ceremonial in Russia.

Yes, she could come to the US on a fiance visa, and you can then marry in the US with less formalities. If you need your marriage to be legally recognized in Russia you'll have to get lots of papers though, so in this case I'd recommend to marry in Russia. Here's info on how to do it and what docs you need: http://waytorussia.net/Practicalities/Marriage.html

Although can have a marriage persay, but do not legalize it in Russia and as Dmitri says it will be complex. But you can do the marriage in a church (I do believe) without the issues of registaring it.

Dmitir, can you post something on your site on the typical Russian marriage customs ?

Hi Paul H. It seems that you have good knowledge on marrying in or out of Russia. Heres my situation. Were trying to decide whether to marry in U.S OR RUSSIA. We can marry in both places, right?, just one is legal? and to get married in the other we could just have a ceremony, in Russia for example? I really want to have a ceremony in a church in Russia but my fiancee keeps saying its impossible to do this? She says it would be illegal? and that noone would do that for us because we would have to register the wedding legal/ stamped if we had it in a Russian church? and she said that if im not the same religion as the church here iIT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE because they dont aloo marrying in the churches here unless i practice that religion?

I really need help here. Were going to live in UPSTATE NY IN U.S and I want us to marry in HAWAII, I HOPE WE COULD DO THIS?

Sorry, that sounds like crap to me.
I know that you are suppose to marry only once in a Russian orthodox Church. But I know many that have married in these churches with different religions.

Contact your local Russian Orthodix church and ask them these questions.

Ok, will do. So i need your opinion on 2 things, 1. will it be better for me to marry her in Russia? and then remove to the united states in 09-10 aftrer her last year of university in st petersburg?. or just marry her in the united states in 09-10? 2. its ok to marry in one country russia/ or us and have ceremony in the other? i was just concerned about the ruusia church issue she brought up but from what you tell me it wont matter much to these churches, im catholic.

I am not sure. I suggest that you go to visajourney.com and ask your questions there.
They are the experts.

Church marriages have no legal standing in Russia at the present time. You must have a duly registered civil ceremony to be lawfully wed.

The ROC does allow interdenominational marriages, at the discretion of the priest. A couple of my sisters have married non RO's. You can be married three times in the ROC. You will find also that the church in Russia is flexing her newly acquired muscles and trying to re impose pre revolutionary values.

Thank you for your response about ROCS. If you can answer i would like to know your opinion on marrying in Russia first? or just get married in America first? then have a ceremony in opposite country in which we married first? We can get married in Russia first then have ceremony in Hawaii or something like that? We really need help in thses areas.

This is becoming a real headache for me and my fiancee, we are not reaching any type of agreement. Please read my post 3 spots above this response to you and see if you understand everything im saying? asking?

I appreciate all the help youve given me so far.
