hey, everyone! I'm moving to St. Petersburg for the summer to study at SPBU (leaving no later than 31 May) and just wanted some advice on some little things...
right now, my hair is strawberry blonde with pink highlights and I'm wondering if this hairstyle will be alright for school as well as Pietr society in general. My Russian friends here think I should stick with my natural strawberry blonde color and get rid of the pink b/c 1. they think it looks ridiculous and 2. they think it'll make me stand out as an American. thoughts?
also, they tell me I need to get used to wearing heels more often. I love wearing high heels, but usually only when I go out to clubs or the theatre. most other times - especially when going to class - I wear my chuck taylors, but they tell me I won't look feminine enough and will be ridiculed for wearing "boy shoes". any advice on clothing would be appreciated here. although these friends are from Russia, they're older (30's) and have lived in the U.S. for at least 7 years, so their views might be a little dated.
also, I plan on doing a lot of travelling once my studies are completed. before visiting friends and family in Slovakia, Amsterdam, France and the UK, I'd also like to visit Yekaterinburg and Magnitogorsk. I'll most likely be doing this travelling alone, so my question is, is it safe for me to do so? I'm well travelled and have a great deal of common sense, but I've never travelled across Europe alone. I've always travelled with at least one other person.

It's hard to say whether you should remove those pink hints from your hair or not.... Are they bright or not? What kind of instituions are you going to study at? It's ok for the Piter society in general, but perhaps it would not look nice in some serious university... If you are going to attend just some Russian course, don't worry, it's ok...
High heels are popular in Russia, but this spring I have seen a lot of balerina shoes in shops. They are also fasionable and look quite womanly - this could be a nice substitution for heels.
Can't say anything about travelling alone( I usually travel together with someone... |

they're not bright, but they're definitely noticeable. I'll be studying Russian at St. Petersburg State University and French at a branch of the Alliance Francaise in St. Petersburg.

good. I wear a ballet flats often, so I'm glad they're becoming popular. I'll still wear heels occasionally and hopefully get used to wearing them more often, but ballet flats are definitely a relief.

As for pink hear i think it is all right. There are a lot of russian who wear bright color hair.
For example month ago i was blondie with green ! highlights and graphite color of back of the head ) and i'm secretary for one moscow company:) it was very beatiful, that is why it does not confuse me or smbd
don't worry about it
we meet extreme russians every day, so your pink hair or shoes (even camelot or something like timberland's shoes) are not surprise russians |

brilliant! green is my favorite color.
I'm glad to know my pink hair won't make me stand out too much. Ultimately, I just don't want to look like a stereotypical American. As long as I succeed in that, I'll be happy.
