Hello Everyone! What documents do you need? Can you buy insurance at the border? If yes, it's cost? Any fees or taxes that must be paid? How long can you keep the car in the country? Read something about needing to take the car to GAI within 10 days of entering the country...if true can you tell me more.

Hi Les. I did have a read of the website but thought l might ask these questions anyway in case things have changed as most of the posts on this subject are at least a year old.

Here's a couple of questions that l didn't see an answer for:

-Do you need to pay a refundable bond to Russian Customs when you enter Russia in a foreign plated car as a sort of gurantee that you will export the car?

-If you intend importing the car into Russia, MUST you declare that intention when you arrive at the border? Or, are you allowed to enter Russia normally then later decide to import the car (paying all taxes, duties, etc.) at the Customs office in Moscow?

Firstly, at the border you will be issued with a temporary import certificate for your foreign registered car which is valid for 10 working days. This document is issued by customs and there are minor charges involved - a few hundred roubles - and a bit of hassle with the document processing. There is no bond or anything else except russian insurance to pay at the border. It doesn't say anything about a bond in the instructions does it?

If you want to fully import the car into Russia, I don't really know whether you need to follow a different procedure at the border. But you don't really say what the circumstances are. I assume you are a non russian citizen travelling to russia on a visa which must then be registered. Therefore, you are likely going as a tourist or on business. If on business, either on a business visa and maybe on a work permit. It is possible to extend temporary import certificates for additional periods of time - generally to the last date for your visa provided you are registered somewhere. There is a maximum extension period - 6m I think. Your best bet is to ask all the questions at the Butovski Customs Office Km26 Warshawske schosse after picking up your temporary import certificate at the border.

I suggest that you read posts from DITTRICH and qwaal (check spelling in user list).

Les
