I'll be in Russia for 9 days in September.

I would like to purchase a SIM card that I can use with my unlocked GSM phone. I would mainly be calling friends in Moscow while I am in Moscow and calling friends in Moscow while I am visiting other cities. I would also be making a few calls to the US to catch up on business while I am away.

When I google for SIM cards to be used in Russia, there are so many results!

I'd love to get advice from someone about where to buy a SIM card that I can use in Russia.

Thanks in advance,

Kat

Why not ask your server? Get connectd to a network that supports calls to, from and within russia. my understanding is that most reputable networks will support such a link. Is this not the case?

Of course my server (AT&T) provides service in Russia, for around $2/minute!

The reason I have an unlocked phone is so that I can interchange SIM cards with better rates for the country I am in at the time.

When you arrive in Russia, go to the first telecom shop (there are a lot a lot of them in any city) and get a contract with one of the major operator: MTS, BeeLine or Megaphone. Megaphone is the easiest, because they won't even write down your passport details, but the problem is that your phone will work either in Moscow or St. Petersburg only. If you need both cities, get Bee Plus (BeeLine) or MTS Jeans tariff.

One minute local is usually $0.25 (inc taxes), international calls are $1-$2 per minute. You can also buy an IP telephone card (recommended - Zebra Telecom) and save about $0.50 per minute on international phone calls.
