Is it possible for the personal at the border to check if the voucher is valid? or they simply trust whats written on the voucher and compare it with the visa?

Again, it's very rare to be asked for your voucher at passport control. Don't show it to them unless they ask for it. I don't see that it would cause any problems if they checked it, so long as you have obtained your voucher from a reliable source.

Below is a new addition regarding documentation to the Russian consulate website in Australia. It may be on their sites in other countries.

"A visa does not guarantee entry into the Russian Federation. As in other countries, the decision to allow entry is taken by the immigration officials. Therefore, the visa holder should carry with him/her, for possible presentation, the same evidence that was submitted to the consular officer in support of the visa."

You would have to make a copy of your invitation and voucher before you sent your application as they only return your passport.
