I am thinking of going on this tour with my sister for our first trip to Russia. Does anyone have any advice on this? We want some flexibility to do things on our own while we are in Moscow and St Petersburg but also want the support of a tour group. How does the cruise work? Does it stay anchored in one location while in the big cities, and can we go out during the day and at night on our own?

These cruises are well organised - but rigid... In Moscow and St.Petersburg you stay at ditant locations with nothing interesting around and complicated communication with the centre - so, you are mostly taking what you are offered: the main programme + optional tours.
If you go out - you need to ride somewhere and in Moscow - it is especially complicated, though the cruise by itself is a big entertainment (I have been once at this journey). Programmes during intermediate stops may be a bit hectic - with 3-4 hours available - but giving a good insigt into Russian provincial life.
