I have been lucky enough to win a 3 day / 2 night holiday for two in Moscow with almost everything thrown in. I'll be taking my wife with me but we can't go until after September 2008.
I've seen a few recommendations on various websites about the best time of year to go but I would still like to know from members of this forum which month after September 2008 would be the best to go for the following;-
1. So it's still sunny and not too cold.
2. To coincide with any major events.

If there's any 'too wonderful to miss' events during the colder months I would consider going then anyway.

The prize includes a Day Tour of Moscow and also a Go Karting Experience but I don't know if either of these items would be more suited to a particular time of the year.

You're not in luck. September in Russia may be warm and sunny, but October and November is least attractive months for tourism in Russia IMO.

I'd recommend late January - early February because of "Frost and Sun - our winter is beautiful" - A. Pushkin, but there are no Russian winter anymore due to global warmup. It's Utter Dark, Dirty, Rainy Hell until late April.

Many thanks for the advice. I have to contact the travel agency which is arranging my short holiday and ask if I can delay my trip until perhaps sometime next May.
I'm not really a fan of cold weather but, as mentioned in my posting, if any great events were taking place late January or early February I might be persuaded to go then.
I do have to give the travel agents dealing with my win at least three alternative dates so two of them may be around the English Bank Holidays in May 2009.
Thanks again for the reply, I do appreciate it.

Temperature does not matter until it's not below -10C.
Snow, Sun + clear sky, -5/-8C is much better than 0/+2C, cold rain, storm wind and dark gray sky, believe me. The former is continental weather, the later is Atlantic one. Alas, there are no other alternatives in the cold half of year in the European part of Russia.

Late September is an excellent time to visit Moscow. It's luck if you have bright sunny days (it is usually), and not if it rains. The end of September is a nice time to come. Mid-october can meet you with cold or even first snow. Anyway it is worth visiting on September. Holidays on May usually dull and rainy and it's more expensive..
