Hey,
I was in St.P on a multi-entry year business visa from Oct-March (when I got the visa in Oct I knew nothing about the new 90day/180day rule). Now I've been offered a job out there again but they want me to start asap and be on a business visa while they sort out a work permit for me (apparently it can take months). I can't stay on the same visa as I will have been in the country for more than the 180 days of the year. So what should I do? Is it ok just to get a 3 month visa while the work permit is being sorted out? If so I would have two visas in my passport. Would the old one be voided? I've tried contacting the company I got the visa support from and am not getting any useful answers. Can anyone help?
Thanks

Officially you can't work in Russia on a 3-month business visa. If you want to be totally in line with the law you have to wait until you get a work permit and only then come to Russia if you stayed longer than 180 days already.

However, if you just wanted to travel to Russia or to do negotiations about your future job you could come to Russia on a 3-month business visa and start arranging your work permit and work visa. You'd then need to leave Russia and get a new work visa to come back.

Also, you need a residency permission in the country where you're obtaining a Russian visa. For example, if you come from EU you can apply in any EU country. However, if you are from the US, and want to apply in Finland, for example, they might require residence permit for the country. You have to check with the consulate beforehand, because sometimes they are not so strict.

Thanks for the advice & for the quick reply.
I'd heard about having to get a work visa in your own country, so, as I'm from the UK, it wouldn't really be worth risking it in Tallinn or Riga consulate, it'd be better just to get a cheap flight to London from there. Also there seem to be different rules for UK than for other EU countries for some reason.

If I get the 3 month business visa would my previous visa be void then? I can just imagine that having 2 visas which are valid could cause a huge number of problems with border guards.

They will void your old visa once they grant you the new one at the consulate. Your old visa will be stamped a big "ÏÎÃÀØÅÍÎ". Warn them, however, that you have a valid visa at the moment of application so that they don't miss it.
If they ask you why you are requesting a new business visa although you have a valid one, you can just answer that you are dealing with another company and you don't have relationship with the previous one anymore, hence the new visa.

I actually have the same problem....I am employed by company A, which just bought Russian company B. I have a business visa, invitor being A, and since I have practically lived in Russia for the last months, I go to "ban" soon since of the 90/180. The company I work now wants though me to work for B after the acquisition. Is it OK, if I just leave Russia, go to embassy with an invitation from B this time and apply for 3 months double entry asking my 1 year multi be cancelled at the same time.

Is that OK? I mean in this manner I could stay here for 6 months (after 3 months cancelling the 1 year visa), before acquiring a working permit, which takes about 3-5 months.

Anyone know if this is OK?
