Hi I'm planning a 3 week trip from Vladivostok to Moscow area in August. I'm travelling alone and will take the train (transsiberian) and stay in homestays etc. I need to bring my laptop with me and I'm trying to decide if a. I should be prepared to carry it everywhere, or b. if it would be safe if I bury it in my large suitcase and only take it out in private. I really don't want anything to happen to my computer but I also don't want to have to carry it at all times during this trip.

I would appreciate any advice.

My two cents? It's not practical to carry your laptop with you everywhere... but you must take pains to ensure that you are able to securely lock it up. I can't remember the last time I took an adventure type trip without a laptop. If I am staying in a hostel or a low price hotel, I make sure that I secure my bag. Part of it is, of course, making sure you can keep folks from knowing that you've got an expensive laptop.

I use one of these and it works very well. It wouldn't stop a dedicated thief, but it will stop the guy who sneaks in your room and tries to boost your stuff...

Lots of other neat products on their website as well.

I used the product above with a backpack in Thailand and Cambodia this year for three weeks. When I left the room at the hotel, I made sure that the PacSafe cable was firmly encircled around a heavy and/or immovable piece of furniture, plumbing, etc.

danbrew, thanks for your 2cents. I agree I really don't want to carry it everywhere (unless that's my only option). I'm bringing my big hardsided suitcase and if I feel it's safe enough I think I'd rather just put it in there with other things I don't need day to day. I'll live out of my backpack and just leave the suitcase closed.

Thanks
Amy
