I am going to St Petersburg for a friends wedding in a couple of weeks. I know that people typically give cash for a wedding gift but after the cost of the trip and hotel, I cannot quit afford a big gift of cash. I want to get the couple a gift from the US instead. Any suggestions as to what would be appropriate?
Anything else I should know about Russian weddings (even though this one is supposed to be non-traditional)? |

What is your budget like, Kaffeine?
I may assure you that your attendance will be a gift on it's own. |

Actually, as I know and see it, the most traidional wedding-present to a new-born family in Russia is something for their new home. Something that both of them could use: to live, to cook (including machinery), to eat from (dishes, tea-sets etc.), to sleep on (meaning bedsheets etc.) etc.
Next thing is something to the celebration istelf, like fine wine or some delicacy ("икра заморская, баклажанная" - "aubergine patе from overseas" ) though this depends.
Also some paired souvenirs, especially those, that can be stored for years and be a good decoration of their home and good "memory anchor" about the happy day they married.
Hope that helped. |
