I don't think that's indicative of their popularity. They are popular pets, but most Russians live in apartments. Maintaining a dog in a small space is neither comfortable or healthy for the dog or the owner.
Economically, many can't afford dogs. If there dog gets pregnant, it might be more than they can afford. Let's remember that we're dealing with a country who's average per capita income is just over a $100/month.
Last, social services are under-developed as well. City agencies that deal with strays (as they do in the West) are under-funded and under-staffed, and are unable to house, feed, and even put to sleep unwanted strays. |

Cyndy,
I don't really know about the dogs living in Russia although I have a few in the US that were sired by Russian imports. I have Black Russian Terriers, another giant breed. They are awesome. I have to say that the breeder in Russian produced some nice dogs that, in turn, produced some awesome ones. If you don't know what they look like, mine can be seen at www.weshowdogs.com. Congrats on your son. Wishing you all a wonderful life here together.

Cyndy,
Everybody I know in Russia has either a dog, or a cat, or bird. Some of these people have a one room flats, and consider their animal just part of the family. Also, the size of the flat doesn't determine the size of dog they keep. One friend has a Shepard, and one has a Mastif. If the friends I have are any indication as to how others there feel about animals, they would feed the dog before themselves.
Where I lived in St.Pete, my flat overlooked the courtyard w/playground between the apartment buildings. It was a very popular place to walk their dogs for their morning, and evening constitutionals. I never saw anyone carrying a plastic bag to pick up the left overs. What was sort of funny, and sad was watching the kids run, and play while dodging the doggy land mines. The flat owners in my building finally had enough, and started going door to door asking everyone who had dogs to pick up the stuff, or walk their dogs somewhere else so their kids could play without getting the crap all over them.
In my area of Pioneerskiya there were alot of stray's which you had to be careful of when coming home at night. Some were downright mean, and hungary. Around most Metro's outside of the city centre you will see people selling all breeds of dogs, cats, and other animals. Sometimes even an occassional snake.
So, if you ask me there are a lot people, who have dogs there, and from what I have seen the people there are mostly very responsible owners who love their pets. |

Darlene,
your dogs are adorable. I am especially fond of Bichons. I trhink its great that Russians are big animal lovers and care for their pets well. Does anyone know if there are particular breeds that are most popular in Russia? Also what Russian breeds are there besides the Russian Wolf Hound and Russian Black Terrier? |

| My street has plenty of stray dogs. There is a pack of dogs at the end of the street. In regions of the city where people have bigger apartments (3-5 rooms) there are many more dogs. Apartment dogs tend to be small, although I have a friend whose rich father in law owns a chocolate lab (I hear that Putin also owns a chocolate lab.) One of my friends has a small dog named Xleba but I worry for people walking dogs because of the big, mean-looking strays. People with apartments big enough to allow them to buy big dogs usually buy pure-bred dogs for a thousand dollars. Xleba lives in a studio apartment and isn't pure anything - he looks like a teddy bear. |

| I find it odd that some Russians spend $1,000 for purbred dogs. It seems like such a large amount of money considering annual per capita income. Of course in US people also spend that much on dogs, including people who don't really make that much money. I guess it is really about priorities or what people choose to indulge in. While some people have their nice cars, or nice homes, spend money on entertainment, trtavel, savings etc, others like purebred dogs. And some people have show dogs. I can understand how people are drawn to purebreds but I, myself would rather spend money in other ways. My dog is a rescue mutt, nothing special in the dog world but is special to me. But I draw the line when it comes to spending alot of money on her. I know for example my sister just recently spent over $300 to try and save her dog's life and the dog died anyway. |

| I personally LOVE dogs!!! I have a cocker spaniel back in Russia, and two labs here in America. I am so addicted to dogs. I have been around dogs since I was born. I was gonna be a vet when I graduate, but it gradually turned out I suck at biology, so I had to give up that idea. I would say a lot of russian people have dogs, anyway in my town they do. Just to give an example, there are about 15 in my 5-storey apartment building. |

Katyara,
You are a sweetheart! Can't you pursuade your host family to allow you to come for a visit? I understand that it is probably not allowed. I may not be in Chicago but as I told you before- you are welcome here. I have a dog, cat. My sister near by has horses. And my latest desire in the animal world is to get an exotic bird. I love birds. My husband however is not so fond so we'll see what develops. Anyways, I wish we could meet. |

| Yuo don't know what BTK is??? My host mom said it was worldwide. BTK stands for Bind, Torture, and Kill. It was a guy from about 30 years ago, and he killed a lot of people around Wichita, KS. They couldn't catch him for about 30 years. He started communicating with the KAKE TV company couple months ago, and they finally caught him yesterday, I guess. |

All dogs are excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!
The pedigree/mixed question is one of personal preference, I have yet to see a dog, which under the proper guidance, had yet to be tamed.
All dogs get their bad reputations through their owners, and society's long-standing belief that they were somehow evil creatures just because they can bark and bite.
Yet the lion is thought of majestic, even though it poses the greatest threat..
for example: mankind's ability to pick on the weaker.
Believe it or not, WOLVES are completely harmless to humans. I know many will question, and many not believe me, but the fact is that its true.
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.(and impact of childhood stories)
Back to dogs, I particulary love the Siberian Husky. Mainly because this breed is perhaps one of the most far removed from other varieties. The independance, the stare, the work ethic, the sheer beauty of her is one so great and the mannerism is one of controlled temperament.
Having said that Rotties, Dobie's, Alsation wolves, Rhodesians are equally excellent!!
As are the small but sometimes mischivous varieties such as the MinPin's and the Chihuahau.
Then of course everything in between; they all have genius qualities because thats what dogs are.
In 500 years from now, they will look back and they will be amazed at how much we underestimated the dog.
Even today, new purposes are being discovered by dogs that were previously unknow(or should that be untrained?),,
Dogas sniffing out money, dogs adapting to modern technologies and environments, the list is endless...
Call me crazy, but I personally think that one of the biggest discoveries will be the fact that dogs were able to react to their owners mind's brainwave emmision, as in locked on like a WebSite, and all the clear science to explain why..(when we get that clever, of course!)
Well I could go on talking about individual breeds forever, but I seriously doubt you would want to hear it.
Does anyone know of an owner of a Jack Russell or Parson's Terrier in Russia? I know the AKC turn their noses up at it..snitches! |

Mountainman,
Welcome to WTR! I share your passion and sentiment about dogs. I agree that wolves pose no threat to humans. Equally so, even lions, tigers, bears etc do not have an instinct to attack humans. Animals provoke when they are threatened in some way. Just as people! I agree that dogs are intelligent creatures and very loyal and loving to their master. However just as people, I am afraid there are some psychotic and retarded dogs. I in the past have had a schizophrenic beagle and a mentally retarded beagle. It's not the breed. The first case was a beagle I rescued and she had issues. The second case was a beagle that I got from a breeder that unfortunately ovewr bred her dogs. In both cases I think humans had something to do with causing the dog's temperment. |

Cyndy,
Its great to hear you like dogs also. They are truly one of the greatest pets.
I think that in this day and age, too many people have these misconceptions about animals of prey, whereas it is every animal which has the natural instinct to fear when they smell/sense people. Although anyone who has tried to out-stare a lion in a zoo will understand that fear quickly becomes action!!
You are right in that animals only attack when provoked, although I have heard of Siberian bears which turn into crazed possessed predators when awoken, but I guess being woken whilst hibernating is about as great a provocation as anything!
Have you ever heard about such bears?
I think dogs have the greater capacity for understanding simply because they have had the advantage of timeless assosiation with us. They have become clever because they have had to be clever to live amongst us, yet maintain their individuality. It has been suggested that dogs were naturally the first animals to openly drop their guard to humans, suggesting an almost fateful link.
Its very unfortunate, but many rescue dogs have deep issues. Whilst some can be re-taught and slowly regain trust, many have faced abuse so far they will never make full recovery. Some of the things that people are capable of doing to dogs is sickening.
Overbreeding and starting a bitch too early is also one of the greater causes of unstable temperament, as is an unstable stud.. But for some people that can be desirable. I know the AKC Dobie's temperament is said too be far more viscious and unreliable than the Continental European's, all though both sides swear that there's is by far the superior!
Thanks for sharing your opinions, and I hope you have not been put off beagles for good(!). |
