I live in a fantastic place in Western Australia and have access to lots of resources. I would like to set-up a business supplying things that are difficult to get in other countries such as Russia. If anyone has suggestions on things that are needed, I would love to know. With the internet, ordering could be simple and shipping not a problem. Do many Russians have access to computers and the internet?
Alternatively, are most Russians able to travel freely to places such as Australia or are passports, distance and exchange rates too prohibitive to travel?

last time i checked, russians had to bring to the embassy papers saying that they have at least $4.000 on their account, stable job and family in Russia, to get australian tourist visa, so i guess it'd be quite difficult for most of russians to get to Australia.
what exactly do you want to sell? crocodile babies?  (j/k) |

This is my observations only, what my fiance tells me, and some of my own experiences.
Some Russians do have computers, but it's extremely expensive to own a computer in Russia and the internet service there can be expensive and not very reliable sometimes. I pay $30.00 a month for 30 hours of service for my fiance and her two 8 year old twins.
Most Russians have an income per month less than what Americans have in one day or a week. Per say, my fiance has three engineering degrees, at the moment working as a chief metalurgist in a huge company 12 hours a day 5 days a week. and makes $140.00 a month. Her utilities cost her $40.00 a month. That leaves $100 per month to survive on, buy clothes and food for themselves. Not Good !
Clothes are extremely expensive over there, food is about the same here except in some instances much higher. I buy 90% of their clothes here in the US and mail them to her. I have her a bank account here in the US and she uses an ATM Debit Card to get extra money when she needs it,mostly for food and emergencies and to pay their internet bill., and I must say, she is very frugal with the money I put in it every month for her.
I just recently carried them a new laptop that cost about $1000 less here than over there. I bought the girls some new games for their new computer on my last trip, more costly than over here, but sometimes they need a little "spoiling" 
They seem to have many of the same items in their stores as we do here in the States...it's just the average Russian cannot afford them.
I would probably think that maybe you need to cater your business to the above average or rich Russians.
I think if you wanted to do a business into Russia, then maybe you need to go for a visit and experience the real Russia. It's awsome !

A while ago I used to attend one forum of russian immigrants in Australia, and most of them say that Australia has less choice of merchandise comparing to Russia/America, and everything is more expensive, especially cars 
So i'm not sure your business would be very good, unless you want to provide something that you can get ONLY in Australia. (thats why i joked about crocodiles)  |

| Contact people in Jagannath health food shop (http://www.jagannath.ru) and supply them with New Zealand honey. Or what could also work is maybe some original Australian clothes, but maybe the best would be to partner with some travel agency and arrange things for them in Australia. OK, here is another suggestion. Maybe hospital, medicine, and medical supplies. I know for a fact these things are in big demand. What I don't know is the names of the buyers, or how you would go about contacting them. I do know that the government subsidizes hospitals, maybe you could start checking with Russian governmental offices for information. Several American companies are suppliers, but most of this sort of materials come from Europen companies. Just a thought........

Seriously, processed food products (such as chicken breasts) are very often imported from other countries. Roses in winter (especially around March 8th!)  |

Bundaberg Rum sport... never seen a drop available anywhere on my travels in Russia and it'd sure take the edge off of a Siberian wind in February...  |

Some time ago, about two months ago, I researched on the use of internet in Russia. Apparently comparatively few Russian citizens have access to the internet and most probably only a small percentage of them reads English. - Taking this into consideration I would recommend you to be careful with setting up a business with Russia based on two unstable factors such as 1. the internet 2. the English language.
