Hi All,

I have a dilema!

My Russian wife cannot take her son alone(British) to Russia because "I" must go along also. (so the embassy says) I'm a brit citizen

My wife says it would be better if our son becomes a Russian citizen with dual nationality. Now I don't mind this , However I really don't want him to be called up for his "National Service"

He will be living in the UK and will travel to Russia as and when his mum and me decide to go.

1: Will he be called up in the future if he is living in the UK?
2: Is there anything official that says he will or won't be called up?
3: What is the process for gaining his dual nationality in the Russian embassy London?
4: Is there any other way out of this madness?

My understanding is that permanent residents of other nations are not called up for service (even if they visit Russia at the appropriate age). This is often a topic of discussion in the adoption community, but as I have a Russian daughter I have not researched it thoroughly. Also dual citizens are required to travel to Russia on a Russian passport. While many do obtain visas in alternate passports and travel that way without difficulty, the only legal way to do this is to have officially renounced ones Russian citizenship.

But they have not traveled during war times. With this conflict and breakdown of relations between the west, who knows what will happen.
