With the conflict now in full-swing, and the U.S. seemingly backing Georgia and condemning Russia, do you think this could affect travel to Russia? I know there are more important things to think about in relation to war, but if relations deteriorate back to Cold War conditions, could we see the end of the Western (American) tourist in Russia? Will it suddenly become really hard to get that tourist Visa?
I travel frequently to the Crimea, and with Ukraines threat to block the return of Russian ships until the conflict is resolved I'm worried this could be then ext hot spot. (Of course Ukraine is already saying that it wants a peaceful dialogue with Russia, first sign of backing down to the big, boys). I have family there in Crimea, and will travel there in early September. I hope this they will be safe and that this trip will still be possible in a few weeks.
I am also worried that after the current friendship treaty expires in December, that Russia will try to annex Crimea, and I won't be able to reach my family if this is now part of Russia, and people from the west can't go there...
Of course not many think the conflict will spread to Ukraine, as this would be even more internationally condemable....
Sorry for the length, thanks to all those who have read and answered. |

Thats a tough question , I would hope we will never see a time like the cold-war again , but I really cant say what the Russian government is thinking these days , the only advice I can offer is that if you believe that your family may be in danger by staying there , get them to leave.
Whilst I can not predict where all this will lead , most Russians agree that if there is an escelattion of hostilities that Ukraine is probarbly next , and I'm inclined to believe they are right |

It's already begun.
West are putting sanctions on Russians and will make it impossible for Russians to enjoy their previous freedoms in the West.
Think big taxes and lots of closed doors.
Like I said before: Russia and South Ossetia: the perfect partnership.
Enjoy. |

West didnt put any sanctions on us and i dont see that anything is impossible to Russians. It sounds very funny) I dunno about what big taxes and closed doors you are talking. Maybe about gas and oil which all Europe buy from us? Or what?
And we dont have partnership with South Ossetia - we have our people there, we have brothership. Do you feel the differense?
And pliz tell me what country could do something against Russia even in economic? USA? But our economic dont depend on USA. European Union? The most part of european leaders knows that Georgias strike was first, so, i dont think that they want to do something against us. Who else? Only you and Condoliza Rise?
2 thisguy Russia will not try to ANNEX Crimea, only RETURN it to us. And i dont think that you will not be able to go there to see your family. Why not? |

So that no-one is under any illusions , the E.U. is currently putting together plans for both sanctions against Russia and a possible blockade, of the 27 memberstates 24 voted in favor sanctions .
It is taking a long time for the E.U. response as there are many factors to be considered , such is the complicated relationship Europe has with Russia , a ban on Russian oil , gas and electricity is nearly certain , , the more extreme option being discussed is a total trade ban with Russia which means Europe will buy nothing from Russia and will sell nothing to Russia.
A travel ban was also proposed , this would have closed the border between Europe and Russia completely , this was proposed by Poland but there is a lot of opposition to this , including my own government who is strongly opposed to closing the border at this time. The Poles also proposed to the U.N. that Russian passports be invalidated due to the issueing criteria , this would mean that you could not travel outside the C.I.F. with a Russian passport , This is highly unlikely to be passed but it is still on the table.
There is also mounting concern that the U.S. is considering bombing Russian nuclear production facilities as this would cut off the supply of nuclear fuel to Iran thereby removing that problem for them.
Finally the E.U. president state is currently France which is looking to talk its way out of this , but the Czech Republic is next and they dont want to simply talk this out as they have already been pushing for military intervention. |

Yeah right, Russian company just bought a large coal miner in the USA today and they own 10% of the USA steel production. American businessman would prostituted their daughter to make an extra dollar. |

Who buys your shit? What are you going to serve your kids in the morning for breakfast? Oil !!
Unfortunately no bloody country is an island. You tried this in past and became an economic failure. You have almost everything you need to economic power in the world including resources and intelligent people, but you screw it up. You have 17 years left in your oil production, then you will be net importer. Your daily production has decreased from 9 million a day to 8 million a day. Russia has not successful completed any offshore drilling on its own either and relies on western companies to do this for them.
Russia also need money to mine their resources and drill this oil. Oligarch take their money out of the country, because they are scared of Putin.
3% of Ossetia is Russian. 30 % was Georgian. You have nothing there. They were given a passport with purchase of Vodka. The Russian soldiers who taking the property from the Georgian villagers, they are just going to take it to the army base and fix it up and return it.
Go listen to your propaganda from the TV stations that are owned by Gasprom which is owned by Gov't which is controlled by Putin. |

They will do as they usually do -nothing. The west in Russian eyes are considered to be a bunch weak pussies and guess what they are right. When they have property seized and sold off, some other western company will buy and think it only happened to the other guy. Shell, Exxon and BP had their land taken away, but Total Oil and Statoil was willing to line to buy it up. |

I wonder, do school children in the U.S. still practice 'duck and cover'? |

It is really sad to know that people are paranoid against America for what Bush has done. More than 75% of Americans are against Bush and this mistake he has done concerning this war in Iraq, but I really don't think America is going to take out a nuclear production facility to cut off fuel to Iran. |

Sadly there are people in the Bush adminastration who would see this as an oppourtunity to kill 3 birds with one stone.
1.Puts an end to the problem of a nuclear Iran
2. Sends an extreme response to Russia about playing ball and so on
3. Practically certain Mc Cain wins next election as Rebublicans have "fear of God" hold over the electorate.
Lets not forget , we are not dealing with one lunatic government here , but many lunatic governments trying to have their say all at once , which is when the most insane things happen usually |

I guess you are being sarcastic (LOL), but just for the information, children in American schools are prepared for disasters and are up to date on drills in their schools. Schools perform drills all the time. |

I am going to be honest here, since we are talking war, governments, blowing up nuclear facilities and all that good stuff, answer me this, when was there a government that wasn't corrupt? I mean in any country. Do you honestly think that governments are ran by angels? |
