I wonder, do school children in the U.S. still practice 'duck and cover'?

Funny you say that, as I had my child watch the childrens video duck and cover.. just so he knew what exactly to expect and how to think and react when he see's the bright light. It's a shame I as a parent wanted him to see this video over and over. But, I feel a little more secure if he's out and about when this happens. Crazy. And no, he said he never heard this in school. Maybe they wait till highschool now adays. Rolling Eyes

Where did you find a duck and cover video for children? Just curious. When I was attending elementary school, I remember having fire drills occasionally, tornado drills rarely and only a few duck and cover drills. It's been awhile since those days and maybe schools have changed drills and their scheduling during the school year.

I wonder do Russian schoolchildren have duck and cover drills, or something similar?

Yes they have such trainings in school. This is called "Grajdanskaya oborona" - "Civil defence". However they know that nuclear war will be end for a the civilization and most likely for the human race. These courses teach how to survive nuclear strike (if it possible at all), but don't teach how to survive after it when the "Fallout" become reality, not just computer game.

I have a habit of going to estate auctions, I bought a case of old war books many years ago and there was an unopened video in one of the books with a paper cover. I opened it and it was called duck and cover for children. I watched it and thought it was very good. But I didn't have a child back then so I just kept it in the book on the book shelf. By sons 10 now, and I had him watch it about a year ago and tested him on what he learned. It was a very good illustration for young kids. There is a youtube video with parts of the video I have, I seen it on youtube. I feel much better knowing my child now knows what to do and how to react .. just incase. I'll see if I can find it on youtube .. and post it 4 ya.

Here ... I have the full version, this is a partial. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvChsvdPGjA&feature=related

It's funny what you can find at a estate sale or a yard sale, "someone's junk is someone else's treasure". A few weeks ago me and my uncle cleaned out my grandmothers basement, she kept everything, took us 3 days to clean it out and 3 rental dumpsters. I found sh*t from the 1800's to the 1940's and so on...war stuff, antiques and vintage items. I found a perfect, in tack bomb shelter packet that our government sent out to families during the WWII. Instructions to build a bomb shelter, duck and cover ect...the military museum is interested in buying this packet. The museum has never been able to find one that still exist or in perfect condition...you never know what you will find in the mist of junk.

Indeed. Ten years ago I helped my father to dig grease pit in his garage. We found silver cover (forks, spoons, teaspoons, knives) at the depth of 2 meters. There weren't any marks on it about author or date of creation. I've never heard about any settlements at that place or any unusual events.

Yes, I am sure that your Gasprom News is not different.
You are only rated to be the 144th on the places with free press.
What I have heard , this information is correct.

Who the judges are and who their benefactors are? Smile

It is interesting how free press was silent, deaf and blind until Russian army entered into South Ossetia. What place it takes? 1, 2? It is also interesting how this free press posted fake photos (Reuters) and fake videos. There are numerous videos on youtube how these photo sessions were created and how fake videos were created. Go to youtube and watch:

watch?v=Jd1AfNA3bQo
watch?v=b1aVeb70qLs
watch?v=3AL3UZ5urqk
watch?v=KbiDjgO_7a0

Another collection is wagthedogreality.wordpress.com. Just watch the videos and think about your free press. Don't you think that something is wrong with this free press that provide you with "truth"?

I think that "Gazprom media" is different. At least they don't stoop to direct lies and fake photo and video fragments. Sure they aren't angels too. I'm sure that they hid something or exagerated something. For example those numbers - 1492 dead. It is difficult to verify, and difficult to count. How they got this number? They quoted Eduard Kokoyty. Most likely these numbers will change. But even if this number 10 times lesser it is still significant.

I think there is no such thing as free press at all. They key to find the truth is to read from various sources and think. For example:

Interesting analysis of satellite images.
UNOSAT wrote:

It is supposed that by looking on this analysis we will have impression that Tskhinvali is not damaged at all. But Tamarasheni have many heavily damaged houses. This should led us to conclusion that Georgian forces actually didn't shelled Tskhinvali with Grads.
Please note that source of this analyis is: U.S. Department of State – HIU

Wikimapia wrote:

Now look to actual satellite footage (pre war). There are peacekeepers base. The right building is barraks. On the analysis from UNOSAT (read U.S. Dept. of State) it isn't marked neither as damaged nor destroyed.

Ground photos wrote:

"Undamaged" peacekeepers barraks. Photo was taken before UNOSAT analysis.

Another one concern is that when building burns it should look like black patch on a satellite image. There is no roof that reflect sunlight. However on "UNOSAT's" image (actually they don't have any satellites, they only process satellite images or outsource processing to somebody else) roofs remain intact. This leads us to another question. Did they used actual satellite data or they simply reprinted what they received from U.S. DS?

I'd like to see real satellite data but there isn't any data.

I don't deny that something like this possible. After all chechen separatist fighters used to get support from civilians and federal troops were angry about that.

But:
1. There were atrocities from both sides during the war. Tit-for-tat.
2. It was very difficult to understand who is an enemy and who is a civilian. Yesterday he is a veteran of WWII, in the morning he brings grenades to his son who fights against federal forces, in the evening he is a civilian, tomorrow he shoots you in the back, next day he helps you to fight another teip, another day he is an innocent victim.
3. References part looks interesting - western media companies (BBC, NY Times, Independent etc read my previous post about fake photos and videos), HR companies which usually receive grants from U.S. and usually turn blind eye when something bad happens with ethnic Russians, Thomas Goltz... h-m-m-m I've heard about this guy, haven't I?

It is interesting how recent events can clarify past events.

I hope no. We'll see. The bad case scenario is following:
1. U.S. helps Georgia to rebuild its military strength.
2. Georgia waits for a comfortable moment and attempts to assault A or S.O. again. Multiple terroristic acts or provocations also possible.
3. Russia responds again, but in more agressive style, not just bombing military infrastructure.
4. Fight go to cities and even to Tbilisi.
5. Country in havoc. Every kind of scum pillages the country, any atrocities possible.

There are also worst case scenario.

BTW, what about satellite images?

I'm sorry but i just have to intervene here.

the possibly biggest lie i've seen in newspapers was when Russia claimed parts of the North Pole as their territory, most probably because of possibilities to find oil and other valuable raw materials at the bottom of the ocean here.

The problem is, the video that the russian government and media published to the whole world, depicting an underwater submarine lowering the flag or analyzing the bottom at the ocean in the North Pole, was fake.

It was a finnish guy who discovered this (I'm from Finland). The movie clip was taken from the movie Titanic, and showed to the whole world.

Having this said, i agree with you to some extent that the US media is far from a "free press", especially Fox News. However, not wanting to brag or anything, i would say the Scandinavian countries has one of the freest media in the world.[quote]I think that "Gazprom media" is different. Lastest news US economy is brink of collapse because

Quote:
Also Thursday Putin announced economic measures which he said were unrelated to the fighting with Georgia. Nineteen U.S. poultry meat companies would be banned from exporting their products to Russia because they had failed health and safety tests, and 29 other companies had been warned to improve their standards or face the same ban, Putin said.

Putin said Russia's health and agricultural ministries had randomly tested the poultry products and found them to be full of antibiotics and arsenic.

After seen what is sold as "food" on the streets of Moscow, I am not sure about this one.

Russia alone here.
First, if you let Ossetia and Abharkia be independent, then this gives back up for Taiwan and Tibet to be free from China. Also every breakaway region now has rights (thanks to the Americans for Kosovo).

Now what is next Moldova and its battle with Romania?

Armenia and Azerbaijan?
Quote:
Moldova declared its independence from the USSR on August 27, 1991. Despite signing international obligations to withdraw,[3] Russian military forces have remained on Moldovan territory; since 1993 they have been stationed in the breakaway territory of Transnistria against the will of the Moldovan Government.[4]
