Today, the migratory service told my girl friend that the only way i can stay with her family in kostroma is through a private visa. I told her to find out if her post office can register a business or tourist visa, she keeps telling me they cannot.
Please, can someone help me, i have read through this entire thread and things are still rather unclear
btw, i am american and plan on getting my business visa through WTR. I will be staying with my girlfriend in kostroma at her parents place. |

Yes, business visas can be registered only in hotels or by inviting organizations. To register a business visa in a private appartment, you need to get a permission letter from the landlord and to give this letter to the inviting organization. Having this letter, the inviting organization can do the registration. |

Dear all,
after two days of exhausting internet research i came up with the following plan for a short-notice trip to visit my girlfriend in moscow:
1. obtain invitation for moscow (tourist visa) through waytorussia (privat visa seems impossible to obtain within 2 weeks)
2. get tourist visa
3. once in moscow, stay with my girlfriend and get registered with her at the local post office
my questions:
a) is it true that i can be registered at a private flat without any problems even if i have tourist instead of private visa? will i have problems because the accomodating party is not the one who invited me?
b) when i fill out the migration card on the plane, how do i have to fill in the "place of residence"-question? inviting organisation, (fictional) hotel or address of my girlfriend?
c) what is the worst that could happen if i proceed like this?
thanks a lot for your help, i would be very happy if that trip were possible! |

I also have one question about the registration of my visa....
I'll be visiting Moscow (and only Moscow!) at the end of November for 4days (of which 2 are businessdays, friday to monday) and was wondering if I need to register my visa? I read that it needs to be done within three businessdays from the arrival in Moscow.
If I don't register my (tourist) visa, will I get in trouble at the customs when I try to leave the country on Monday (though SVO2).
Thanks for your help! |

Hi...
I've been reading all the topic, and I didn't find any clear answer for this question :
Is it possible to register a tourist visa for the whole stay period, by the owner of the appartment, or a person who's registered at this adress ?
Is it legal ? Is it a right, or only a possibility ?
I'm not dealing with buisness visa, but tourist visa...
Огромное спасибо ! |

Thank you for the answer...
So, it's possible to make the hotel register the tourist visa. But if I don't live in any hotel, must this one register my visa ? Or he just can ?
Is there this kind of hotel in each town ? For examle, I want to go in Izhevsk...
In a simpler way, how can I register my tourist visa in a town as Izhevsk, without sleeping in a hotel ?
Thanks again. |

| If I write down my friend's adress in the visa tourist support (instead of nothing, or instead of a hotel's name), will be my friend legally able to register me in a post office or at OVIR ? |

Specifically regarding Izhevsk, you probably can't. I have heard that the Izhevsk authorities will not register foreigners at private residences. Why? Who knows. They are laws unto themselves.

No - only hotels can be listed on a tourist visa support. Your friend would need to send you a private invitation (this takes a long time).
Sorry, there aren't really any solutions. If you travel on a tourist visa in Izhevsk then you either stay in a hotel or you don't register. Of course, you could still try to register at your friend's place - it's possible that it will be allowed. |

Mmm... I've been reading on the site of Way to Russia, that it's possible to register one's own visa with a letter from the agency... And that for all town where no one agency is affiliated with the inviting one.
Is that right ? |

As of 2007, the russian government do not really care where you register at. If you originally intended to stay in a hotel buy decided to stay with your girl, fine. If you originally intended to stay with your girl, but decided to stay at a hotel, fine. All the russian government cares about, is that you register within 3 days of the city you will be residing in.
Failure to register will have grave consequences. In the past, prior to 2007, you had to stay at the hotel your invite letter stated. But I think the russian goverment saw that this was serious limitation placed on tourists, and it hurt potential tourism, which of course hurt the flow of money coming to russia.
The only reason you would need to get a private(homestay) visa is if you intended to stay longer than 30 days. If you intended to stay 14 days to visit moscow or your woman, get a tourist visa. If you intended to stay with your woman for 60 days... you would NEED a private visa, which of course would take longer to process, because you intend to stay longer, which would require more documentation and more paperwork.
It is no different in the USA. Why do you think it takes a foreigner longer to get a work visa for the USA, versus a tourist visa?
When I visited my fiancee in July, I acquired a tourist visa and on the visa application I put down that was visiting for tourism/private reasons.
On my cover letter, I wrote that I was visiting "xxxx" city to sight see and to see my fiancee for 13 days. I did not mention that I was staying at a hotel or a flat. Why? Because they do not care, as long as you register at your destination.
Hope this helps.
