Hi, I need a hotel room in Vladivostok on January 9 and 10, 2009. All of the travel websites I have checked have said "no availability" on these date - I don't know if this is because they are crappy websites or because of the Russian holiday. Any pointers towards a hotel near the train station would be appreciated.

thx,

danbrew

Danbrew,
Tried Hotel Gavan (if it is still there...)? It's not central but within a fair walking distance. Certainly a good deal closer than the Intourist office where it used to be on Okeanskiy.

I'll check some links I may have tucked away somewhere later.

It is the middle of winter, he can make an Igloo or snow fort to stay in

Going to Magadan also?
I am saving Vladivlastock for the summer. I hear it is beautiful.

Danbrew,
www.gavan.ru and they have an english page. Website looks the goods.

Paul,
I wonder how many people will die in their flats this winter in Vladivostok? They may be better off in Igloos.

I remember before that the local utility company were going to steal the family pets and ransom them back to the family so they pay the bill.

masterdooh,
Hmmm...I'd be looking at sleeping under railway staircases...
Be that as it may, Lonely Planet Trans sib or The Trans Sib handbook have a list of places to stay. IIRC there is a slightly dive-like place around the railway station.

And do not expect much for your dough..I found a 3 or 4 star rating to be the equivalent of a run down B&B/pub in Vladivostok....

The 5 star (a true rating!) Hyundai (? faulty memory..) on the way to the airport would fund a 3rd world nations debt for a room.....
