Hope some of you could give me a hand in finding some things in Moscow. I haven't done a lot of grocery shopping in Moscow. Last trip most of my time was in Penza.
I want to make up some common regional dishes while in Moscow and need to know what ingredients I will need to bring with me.. and what I can buy locally.
If you have seen any of these things and remember were.. Please post a link to the location maybe via google maps? Also, any translation of what they would be called or what to ask for would be appreciated.
American style pancake mix
Maple syrup
tortillas
yellow or white mild cheddar cheese
Bagels
Taco shells ( don't laugh.. I DID see them in Penza )
thanks for any help you can give.. needless to say.. the less you have to bring with you in luggage the better. |

I was craving a lot of that stuff when I was in Moscow and there is a place called "Stockmans" that had a lot of American products, but be warned, it is fairly expensive. There are several in Moscow. If you take the Purple line of the metro to the last stop- Выхино- and go down the stairs and to the left there are several buses that go out to Ashan, Ikea, and other big stores. The bus is free, takes about 15-20 minutes to get out to the stores. It really depends how much you want the stuff though, it is quite a journey! If you can find one closer to the center of the city though, that would be much easier. They just recently closed one down, dont know if they reopened it though...it was a bunch of politics.....
Good luck finding all of it though! |

| Stockmans has maple syrup 100%. That was one of the things I was searching for. They had 4-5 different kinds. |

Thanks for the hint cons maple syrup ))
As for Samokhval I would not say it's so widely spread in Moscow.. I would say it's operating mostly outer moscow and not in Moscow itself..
Have not faced any lack of food etc in Moscow supermarkets yet though |

In Russia, what are those delicious packets of dehydrated fish sprinkled with paprika called?
Can't find anything simlar at home since last leaving Russia. A Russian friend of mine loves snacking on them while drinking beer. As do I!

Thanks, they were faintly yellow coloured fish. As much as I'd like to nip down to the local Woolworths and ask for some, sadly they seem to be only an "in Russia" treat. |

In 2007, I shopped at a large supermarket near Maryino Metro station in Moscow (I don't remember the street address). I saw a box of taco shells and wondered if it is popular for Muscovites to eat Mexican food at home. The supermarket sold many kinds of cheese and other items you would need to make Mexican food. I don't know if the taco shells are still sold in 2008.

I know what you mean about the Media, both ways. In the 1980s, someone suggested I visit the Soviet Union and see for myself how Soviet people lived instead of relying on Western media reporting, so I went. |

For expat food in Moscow, then talk with the Expats at expat.ru
Russia is starting to multi global country and they are very proactive to try new things. Lets face it, curousity is built in an average Russian nature. Go ask young lady about Sushi and she will be delite to tell you where her favorote restaurant is.
This is not your old Soviet Russia anymore, but a global metro
There is many online Russian stores and even one at city near you. Find the local Russian culture website and ask them |
