he does our business and tourist visas and will easily sort out a tourist invitation or business one overnight for you, not expensive and they have an excellent service. | I emailed him. But surely they can't get a visa any faster than I can via the embassy? I'll let you know if they can, because it would be a great service if they could. |

Probably not. They (Russian Visa Shop) seem to be a UK based visa facilitator. I'm not sure I'd use somebody that didn't have loads of experience with the consulate that you're dealing with. You have a few choices - use a Canadian firm or do it yourself. You pretty much won't be able to do anything until you obtain your passport. Once you have a passport, you can seek an invitation (using the # on your passport). Once you have the invitation, you can obtain a visa.
If you do obtain your passport on 12/8, you have enough working days to obtain a Russian visa - unless the holidays get in the way. Who knows whether the Russian Consulate in Toronto will take any holiday in December - more likely in the first week or so of January.
If it were me, I wouldn't screw around with any visa firm other than one in Toronto. I don't know these guys from Adam, but they were the first in a search for "Russian Visa" +Canada +Toronto:
http://visa.visaconnection.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=32&dest=Russian+Federation&nat=Canada&type=Tourist&noe=Single&mls=30&vf=90
If I were you, I wouldn't quibble about the dollars involved - it is what it is. You can do it on your own for $75 and hope you get it right, or you can engage folks that do it every day. I've visited Russia many times over the last six years and still use a visa processing firm. I sent my visa application off a few days ago and it'll cost about $250 after all is said and done. Plus the $3000 for the rest of the trip. Russia is not inexpensive... as you'll figure out.
While you *could* buy airplane tickets, I'm not sure I would if I were in your situation - at least not until you figure everything out. You could easily find yourself in a situation where you have a $1000 ticket that you need to change, etc. Or you could simply push your trip back to later in January or February.
Anyhow, that's my two cents. Good luck on your trip, and please do share with us how it turns out - whether you do it on your own, use a visa processing firm, etc.

As I suspected, they can't help at all. Their website even has incorrect information about visas. Oh well.
I have passport now and I have faxed off my request to book a hotel. So now I have to wait for a return fax. On monday, I think I will be able to send everything to the embassy.
I'll let you know how it goes! |

ok, so I have a new problem now...
The hotel in Russia faxed to me a paper saying that I have a hotel room reserved for jan 17-27. It says the name of the hotel and it has some kind of a seal in the middle with a small picture of their hotel.
I asked the embassy about this and they asked me to fax a copy to them so they could view it. Apparently it is not good enough for them. They need something more from the hotel. But I talked to the hotel and they say they can provide me with nothing more.
So it looks like now I might have to use the invitation service on this website. But can I still do that? Get that invitation and then stay at the hotel in Ulyanovsk, have them register my visa, etc? I don't want to get in trouble, or worse, get kicked out of the country for not staying at the hotel listed on my invitation.
Help please |

Hi there, all you need is a tourist invite, it doesn't matter where you stay, it matters more that you get the invite. I now live in Ulyanovsk, I used to get my tourist visa invite from the intourist office oposite the russian embassy in london for £25. This was good enough for the embassy. I never stayed more than a couple of times in Moscow and never in a hotel in Ulyanovsk, I always stayed with friends. Get the invite, get your tourist Visa and stay where you like. Whichever hotel you stay at will register you. As I said I live in Ulyanovsk with a residents permit, let me know if you need any info or help. Andy
P.S You mention in your original post the need to have flight tickets to Ulyanovsk in order to get your Visa. You will not need to show proof of onward travel at all. I never ever have and depending on when I get to Moscow and which airport I will either fly or catch a train. All booked and paid for when I get to Moscow. Just remember on the Visa application to put all the towns and cities you intend to visit. |

I need a for sure answer about one thing before I send my application.
On the visa application it asks "Route of Journey". What do I put here? Moscow, Ulyanovsk? Does it matter if my invite only says Moscow? I suspect they might give me trouble for having registered in Ulyanovsk despite my invitation saying Moscow? So what happens when I go to leave the country? Im still a bit confused about this part. Everything else is clear to me.
Oh, and on the invite I put "Moscow, Ulyanovsk" for cities that I will visit. So should my visa application say the same thing?
I just don't want to get blacklisted or something. Thanks to anyone who can give me an answer. |

For the route put the city that you are flying out of and the one that you arrive in, eg Toronto, Moscow.
Just put exactly the same as what is on your invitation. Once through immigration you can go pretty well anywhere. The hotel you stay at will take your money and register you without question.. |
