Hello, my name is Jorge, I´m spanish
I´m thinking of a future trip to Russia but not to Moscow and St. Petersburg. I´m thinking to go with my girlfriend to one city like Rostov or Novosibirsk. But I´m scared of the situation for a lot reasons:
I don´t speak russian  , my english is a little bad as you can see now , Maybe travel to Russia is expensive.
But the main reason is the people:
Some countries don´t want people to a specific country (for example Israel and Palestina, Peru and Chile, arab countries and USA) and Im scared if russian people don´t want spanish people (me) or mexican people (my girlfriend).
Another reason that I´m thinking to not go is one video I have seen in youtube of the city of Rostov. Searching to see about the city of Rostov I see one video that I regret to have seen. A great group of two bands of russian hooligans fought seriously. This is so pathetic. They are savages.
For these reasons I´m scared because we don´t want violence problems and similar. For example, my girlfriend don´t want to go to USA because a lot of people is sick (sincerely Spain isnt an exception).
I don´t want anyone to feel offended, I like Russia and since I was children, I wanted to go to Russia.
Russia is dangerous?

hey Jorge,
As a Russian I would say Russia's as dangerous as any other country, you just have to be sensible.
As for Rostov and Novosibirsk, you don't have to worry about your english as you would hardly find anyone to speak it there to lol
Seriously why not start from Moscow or Saint Petersburg?
Honestly. Those two cities offer great variety of activities and sightseeng etc for tourists. Why going deep to country without speaking Russian? That might be quite difficult to manage.
I've lived in Irkutsk before, that's in Eastern Siberia, quite close to Baikal Lake, and we had loads of foreign tourists all year round and I should say the locals still don't speak English much. So maybe reconsider your trip?
Jmo, though, as usual 
As for expenses yeah it requires some money but as any other country to take a journey to.
What exactly would you like to see or to do in Russia? Without knowing that it's rather hard to estimate your possible expenses. |

I´m happy with your nice response, you are so friendly. Yes, the idea was to go to a place where people don´t normally go (to do something different) but if you told me Moscow and St. Pettersburg are really good I will think about that. A little problem appears: I´m living in Madrid, I have to study hard my degree that is so hard for me (I can´t imagine my degree in Russia that I have read the university level is so difficult, simply the death  ). I'm saturated and stressed out with the city and the degree I suposse I live until 50 years with this type of life...but I stop, I don´t want to ever get bored with my penalties...
Go to a big city to Moscow and St. Peterburg maybe contributes to my stress, Are this cities congested and saturated?

always glad to help if i can.
am i getting you right that you would prefer to have a calm and peaceful rest rather than hectic and enthusiastic rush through the cities and sightseengs? ))
if yes, calm and piece, then probably moscow and saint-petersburg are not good destinations to come.. but still, taking a journey to more desert places where you won't be able to communicate can spoil the whole vacation
again, what are your ideas of seeing in russia?.. why russia actually? )) |

Why do you say I won´t be able to communicate? The villages of Russia have no communication?
Ok, I will to explain you why Russia and not other places. I wanted to go to Russia on summer. I don´t know what is your idea of Spain but Spain in summer is an oven, 35 degrees or 40 degrees in Madrid, I´m tired and bored and I can´t sleep with this hot. This is the reason that I want to escape to a cold nation and I think Russia is too cold. However, Russia tradition is so different to spanish tradition for example the religion. I´m catholic and I belive in JesusChrist, I hope this is not a problem in Russia. I want to know the cathedrals in Russia because the designs and art are so different, maybe similar to byzantine art and in Spain we have different arquitectures called: gothic (french influence), romanic (european influence) and plateresco style and mudéjar style (the last is only in Spain). The cathedral domes in Russia are so interesting.

Being catholic is certainly no problem while visiting Russia
As for summer it's hot in July and in Siberia tempertures may rise up to 40C (in shadow!) as well as Moscow etc.
Though due to climate changes we experience quite wierd tempretures in winter and in summer in moscow (not really cold in winter and no so hot in summer).
But i guess we're into so many details and probably it would be more comfortable to talk via msn or yahoo, wouldn't it? |

My suggestion would be St Petes in the summer, then you can visit Petergof and Hermitage.
Novgorod is nice city and not so busy. Golden Ring is a great place to visit with many small cities that are beautiful. You can do quick visits to the main cities, then back to the smaller ones
I have met many Spaniard in my visits to Russia. Russian women love Spanish music, so you will be ok. They like Spain and frequently do vacations there.
You will be fine. |

There is no reason to be scared:)), Russian People are VERY friendly and always welcome tourists from different countries!!! Why don't you watch some Russian video to get the feel of Russia before you go there, I would suggest to start from Moscow, veryyyyyy nice place to start seeing Russia.

Sure you can go anyway you want but i should say - Moscow is very expensive
About that video - of course there are some situations like that, but I don't think that hooligans will harm you |

| There is no reason to be scared of. Russian People are very nice, helpful, respectful and friendly and always welcome tourists from other countries. And i do believe in that, the fact that my previous boss is russian. |
