Face control is supposed to take place for safety... Guards on an entrance do not let in those, who as they think, can bring troubles... Also they can ask you to show them whats inside your bag(and this is annoying)... But if you dont look like a gangster and dont wear sports clothes, then you are gonna have no problems

That last part isn't true...my brother in law doesn't look like a gangster..he actually dresses nice and is good looking and they didn't let him into a club just because he is half Armenian.
So basically if you look "chernui" (means black in english) ...the term they use for people from the countries south of russia (they have dark hair and their skin is a bit darker) , i think they are called the caucauses, such as Georgia, Armenia, etc. then they might not let you in.

Bryanboy, you sound like THE person to talk to about clubs in Moscow & St. Petersburg. Having never been to Russia (but going soon), I'm wondering if I could encounter problems entering elite clubs. I've never ran into problems entering clubs and would say my friends and I dress as well as or sometimes better than the typical clubber. I'm more concerned with what I'm wearing opposed to who I'm wearing. I would rather wear/buy a pretty/fashion forward $28 Gap top then a so-so ugly $125 Gucci top. I can justify spending $130 on nike shoes and close to $200 on jeans but refuse to drop hundreds of dollars on clubwear. According to my friends who have been to St Pete, I won't exactly blend into the crowd (apparantly there aren't too many Afican-American girls walking around) so I feel like I should dress well or soemthing. Plus, I love clubing and would hate to go to a low brow club or wait outside in the cold...that would be a depressing sight

Hiya..

Um... no, i'm NOT the person to talk to about clubs. LOL. I just went to a couple of clubs and that's all... nothing special... just sharing what i've seen and what i've encountered. Wink

Personally I don't think you'd have problem entering clubs. Just be yourself and show up. Always remember that as a foreigner, you'll *always* stand out and you'll "never" fit in. There's always something different in everyone.

In fact, I even think it's a good thing.

Attention is always good -- some people even go to great lengths just to get attention. Wink

Like in most places, just put a positive attitude (although sometimes you have to put a bitchy/snob face). Try to talk to strangers -- a lot of Russians are extremely friendly!

In the event you're out on your OWN and you encounter face control (which i doubt will happen), just act cool, smoke a cigarette outside, pretend you're waiting for someone, and when you see a little group of well-dressed russians, chat them up, smile lots and get them to get you in inside. You'd be surprised how friendly russians are and they'd even offer to buy you a drink, make you feel comfortable and presto -- you've got instant companions for the night. a lot of them are VERY VERY VERY nice and they are extremely open in getting to know people etc.

Smile

after living with and hanging out with russians through college i think i've already experienced being the "odd" one out. i'll don't really expect to fully fit in per se but to simply learn as much as i can and still have a good time. in your message you said "a lot of them (russians) are VERY VERY VERY nice and they are extremely open in getting to know people etc" but i've almost always encountered the opposite. i mean my russian friends are some of the nicest ppl i've ever meet but first encounters haven't always been the best. anyhow, the club scene should be fun and at the very least interesting. perhaps i'll even learn to enjoy eastern european pop music Laughing

just returned to canada after spending 3 months in russia, (2 in st. petes) had a blast and i thought it would benefit the forum if i added reviews of some of the clubs i went to.

datcha
beside gostiny dvor, the place has cheap drinks (50 roubles for draft beer), descent music (mostly old soul and funk, but lots of 'ironic' hits from the 80's and 90's as well. the place is uncomfortably packed on fridays/saturdays (to enjoy it these nights, you need lots of vodka), weekdays are alot more comfortable, with room to move, but still tough to find a seat after 10pm. the crowd is mostly students (most of whom know at least some english), lots of foriegners (guys and girls- with a high factor of grey haired lecherous men looking for an 18yr old blonds). i made at least 2 new friends every night i went there. they got a foosball table, and filthy bathrooms. also, if you plan on going here, bring a bottle of febreeZe to town with you, because they dont have a coat check, and everything that enters the place smells worse then joe camels asshole when you leave.

red lion
over by the bronze horseman, english style pub, lots of room, bands almost every night, and a dj following that. theyve got a big projection screen tv for football matches, and lots of lame posters on the walls. not too bad price wise, but not too good either. the service is hit and miss at times, but the new chef gave me a free hamburger one time when i complained to drunkenly and loudly, so i got no bitches. check it out the first thursday of every month, when hot english magazine throws their parties, which can be pretty fun, other then that, its just an english pub.

shamrock irish bar, the office pub
a couple more 'british pubs' both are boooring and the office is totally over priced (200 roubles for a fucking beer?). i recommend you dont go anywhere near these places... i think the shamrock is near the marinsky, and the office is on kazanskaya.

city bar
near the summer palace on millionarskaya. really small, and again no coat check. lots of lecherous old men after young hotties. the music is really hit and miss, the service is kinda slow (10 minutes to get a beer from a bar 5 feet wide is a joke). i had fun one time i was there, but i think its because of all the free booze i won. at least its a good atmosphere for meeting new people.

moloko
over by plochsod vosstanyyia, old nevskii, underground rock club with a cool interior and modestly priced drinks. saw a shitty band play there, but im sure if you go on the right night the place would be rockin. not too great for meeting people as the music gets pretty loud.

rossi's club
on rossi ulitza near lomonsov square, this is what we call a pick-up bar in my city... they got bands early in the night, followed by dj's until morning. lots of hot girls, and not thaaat bad of music (although they managed to play spice girls, the scat man, and informer without any sense of irony at all...) the drinks are so so priced, and theres free entrance to foriegners with passports on thursdays (also free champagne for girls till midnight). and they have strippers here too which doesnt hurt.

Apollo
gaudy space themed club on moscovsky prospect i think... the coolest thing about this place is the ugly ass sculptures of the predator. which isnt very cool at all. lots of neon lights, gorrilla security gaurds, and plenty of chachy wankers running around trying to look like trendy club goers. over priced and not worth your time.

Revolutsia
sadovaya ulitza in apraktsin dvor. 5 storied club for mostly students (ages range from maybe 17 - 20 i guess). decorated with cheezy soviet memorabilia and machine guns. they play house music on the 4th floor, and lots of shitty russian pop on the 3rd floor, with the occasional live pop act. totally packed on the weekends, lots of hot girls (although youre probably gonna need to speak some russian if you want to talk to most of them). also, if you dont want to wait in line for 2 hours (on weekends) try and get there before 11pm. also the bar on the 4th floor tends to run out of beer by about 4:30 every saturday, which is a pain in the ass, but what can you do.

Tinkoff
brewery pub/bar on kazanskaya. i went and saw kid koala play there, which was a cool show. the beer is fucking expensive (i dont care how micro your brew is, i'm not paying 120 roubles for a plastic cup of it). dont bother with the restraunt unless you want to drop a bunch of dough, and im not sure if they have regular night club nights there, or just special one-off shows like the one i went to.

tunnel club
the 'rave' club in town, in a bomb shelter on the wrong side of the river (plan on staying at least until the bridges open in the morning). 3 rooms, styles depending on what dj's are playing (theyve always got flyers at the clothing store interactive on maly sadovaya (next to channel 5's studio)). i suspect that the 3rd room is always hip hop/rnb, but im not sure as i only went there one time. lots of people on ecstasy clutching stuffed animals when i was there, but also some kick ass drum and bass. i think beers were like 60 roubles a pop.

red club
down by moscovskii vokzal, saw dj vadim play here, was a good show, but the place was way too crowded. 3 rooms with dancefloors, but expensive drinks (only heineken beer? wtf?) too many be-dreadlocked hippies smelling of patchooli, but there were lots of hot girls, so i guess it evened out.

also, i went and saw a few SKA hockey games at the ice palace... kick ass hockey in a brand new arena for 120 roubles, with plenty of NHL talent. i highly recommend seeing a game if you get the chance. also, a SKA scarf makes a nice souvenir, and tickets are alot easier to buy then zenit tickets.

well, thats all i got time to write right now, hope this helped some.

Bryan, have you ever been to the Greenwich Village in New York City? I have a feeling you would be right at home.
