Hello all,

When I got green card in Russia it was use my own family name and also my external Russian passport had my own family name. When we got married before came to America I took my husband family name and change internal passport with my husband family name). After move to America, all my documents and my American passport I use my own name. Last year I call embassy to find out how to get new Russian passport (Since I came with USSR passport). They told me to send them my internal and external passport along with the copy of my American passport. Last month I receive my new Russian passport with my husband family name. I called and asked why it is my husband family name not my own. They told me because I had my husband family name in my internal passport and they only can go by internal passport since I still have propiska in Russia which I don't want to give up. Here is my question..If I fly with Russian passport with different family name then my American passport should I have any problem on my way back to America? I know I have to use Russian passport to go to Russia and to come back use American passport. I need to go to russia by this summer and I don't know if I will be in problem or not!Please..Please help!

thanks,
olga

If you plan to:

*enter Russia on a valid Russian passport
*and then return to America on the valid US passport

Where is the problem?

Passport control in both countries don't do a comparison survey of various passports you may be holding. The only issue you might bump into is a discrepancy of names on the airline ticket manifest. But since you have ironclad proof (both passports) of a Russian name and a married American name, everything will match up in the event of of a question.

The world is full of people who own more than one passport from more than one country. It's just not a big deal.

Thanks for the reply.I think you misunderstand that my married name is not american.we did married in russia...if I married in america then I know I shouldn't have any problem because I would have change of name documents but since I married in former USSR I don't have no change of name documents other then marriage certificate and internal passport with different name. Now like you said..if I fly with russian passport which I have to do then I need to buy airline ticket with the same name which is in the russian passport.I know I can go russia like that but my only worry is the time when I'm gonna try to come back.Russian airport if I show my American passport and the ticket and the name (family name) not gonna match and that is the problem I'm worry about.Someone told me I can call russian consulate and ask them to put stamp in my russian passport that it's the same person with two diffrent family name.Any idea if they do somthing like that?

You should not have any troubles as long as you have all your passports available if someone questions your name. What '_expat said is correct. It doesn't matter where you were married, as long as all pssports are valid. As to your last question, you won't be given a visa for your US passport if you say that you are still a Russian citizen. I do not recommend lying to obtain such a visa. Travel to Russia on your US passport is not an option.
