| Yikes! I just bought 3000 rubles (all bills) from my bank and while the denominations are correct (i.e. no extra zeros) the bills are dated 1997. I'm of the understanding that bills pre -1998 will not be accepted in russia. am i holding a worthless pile of paper?! |

The banknotes in my pocket also dated by 1997 and they can be used. Look here: http://www.bank-note.org/russia.html These banknotes are active and usable.
The only thing you should be aware is that there is no 5 roubles in paper anymore, only in metal. I haven't seen them for a long period of time. |

Perhaps they thought about 1993 money or so. If you can do the scan of your banknotes and show them I'll be able to say if they real or not. PM me if you aren't sure. |

Thanks...i'm not sure what PM is so I'll try the forum!
when i was in st. pete's in march, every piece of currency i had was dated 1998 and up- most 1998. and from what i knew/was told, it was the "currency of choice".
I ordered 3000 thru my bank, who deals with a vendor in FL. their vendor claims that all bills printed from jan 1997 are valid... Every single bill that came to me was dated 1997, which I thought odd. I mean, every one? so based on what I (thought?) i knew about the denomination switch, i figured that A) they were invalid in Ru and B) they could be forged (what a great way to make $$- sell worthless or fake rubles to the unknowing). not wanting to take chances, i turned them back in to my bank.
i figured i'd buy some now because the ruble to the $$ is so low and 3000 will last me over a week in the countryside. maybe i erred in returning them? i suppose i can just try another bank...what's your opinion on every bill being datd 1997? |

I've just checked my pockets. Every bill is dated by 1997. Even new bills produced today are dated by 1997. Old money should have 1993 mark on them, they are not valid now.
