because expat.ru is starting to suck - the same 5 idiots post again and again and again and posts get deleted for being the tiniest bit offensive to the oversexed, overage Brits that run the site.

Nothing wrong with wanting sex. The losers that run the expat site just think that they're going to get it from the Russian girls that go to the site. Then they try to convince the foreigners that 6000 bucks is an ok price to pay per month for a rennovated apartment.

I am here in preparation for a trip to Moscow in March 05. I started using the forums to help better understand the Russian people that I might meet in Moscow.

I guess because this is in English most of the people I have met here are non-Russians so far. So learning about Russians has been limited.

Just curious, but most members have not included the name of place of their residence. It makes it difficult to relate properly , ceates an incomplete point of reference, when you don't know anything about the people who are posting such as: nationality, place of residence etc. Just a comment. OK?

I'm from the sprawling suburbs of Northern New Jersey but I live in an area of the center of Moscow called Zamoskvoreche (under the Moscow river.)

I am curious what brought you over to Moscow to live there? Was it your work? Do you like living in Moscow?

It's hard to admit that girls could have sparked an interest, but that's what happened and now I'm learning the language. As a matter of fact, I'm majoring in Russian in school.

It's hard to justify why I'm doing this now (it's a serious interest that no longer has anything to do with girls). But to me, it's not necessary to be able to explain why something is interesting.

I guess, being a Slav, in particular a Russian, living continuously for last twelve years outside of my "ethnocultural environment" I am trying to understand how others see me and my roots, it is a sort of ability to look at oneself from the side.

I guess that's something I'm looking for too, although I've always lived in the US! I always feel like I'm not satisfied with the worldview you're constantly presented with in this country.
It's a little disturbing sometimes when I find Russian culture tries to be as American as possible. For example, everyone knows about American pop music, but no-one knows about Russian pop music. Most Russians probably know more about the American mainstream than I do.

Some foreign colleagues of mine asked me to recommend them some informational sites for an upcoming visit to Russia, and this is one of the first I stumbled upon. The forum seemed interesting, so I joined.

I'm genuinely curious: what do you find "nice" about Russia? Is this in reference to the people there? I see things like store clerks ignoring you; customer service reps give you the smirk when they see you not get what you want; hearing "f- y-" when guys hear you speaking English; amazingly hostile babushkas. "nice" is not my first choice of words to describe Russia. *But* (Big Butte) - my experience is mainly in the Ukraine. Russia, next door, seems noticeably warmer. I wouldn't recommend these countries for a honeymoon. I thought you speak good Russian? Often when there, I wish I didn't know Russian well. ignorance is bliss.
So my question is: how do Ukraine and Russia differ?
