| I am looking for some some what decent shopping malls in Moscow. GUM is WAY to expensive as is the underground shopping center there near the kremlin. I have to believe there are some malls within moscow that are probably not near the center that we can go shopping in. My girl friend and I are not very familiar with moscow but we have read enough to know that we want to stay away from GUM and the mall underground there. She is wanting to shop for bags, shoes, clothing, etc. lol the typically things woman want. Any suggestions? |

| Suggestion: buy those imported things at home, cheaper from where they're produced, with lower import taxes for those produced in Europe, and with the certainty that you're buying the real stuff, not some copy made in Khimki. |

| You can try the Izmailovo Market near the Partizanskaya Metro Station for a taste of real Russian shopping. This has the added bonus of surrounding the best souvenir market in Moscow. |

Actually I quite like Okhodny Ryad (the underground mall). I believe 90% of the clothes in my closet came from there.
If you're clothes buying, Sachi is great. After the items have been in the store for about 6 weeks they start marking them down thirty percent. Then mark them down again. Nice quality clothes and some great deals to be had year round, and their end of season sales are even better. Nice quality contemporary fashions at pretty affordable prices. Sachi has a number of locations in Moscow but this is the best one.
Okhodny Ryad also has Moscow's best Oggi (multiple locations). Dirt cheap clothing chain, everything made in Russia. The finish quality of the clothes isn't so great but when regular price is 499 rubles, what the hey, how long do you want it to last? If you wear a skirt for 2 years @499 rubles, that's 10 dollars a year.....then throw it away.
And anybody's gotta love the end of season sales at Mango.
The lowest floor of Okhodny Ryad is the best/cheapest floor.
There are some affordable stores on Tverskaya, believe it or not. Monsoon is rocking when there's a sale.
There are also a couple of good places on that little street that runs beside the Gum where all the shoe stores are.
On the corner of Krasnaya Presnaya across the street from 1905 Goda Metro there is a big 4 floor Benetton that is connected to a couple of other clothing stores in the same building. This is a good place.
The best thing to do overall, is hit the end of season sales. Twice a year, after the New Year holiday and again in July. This is your best bet. You can find markdowns of 50-70% all over Moscow. Because Moscow is so fashion conscious, out of season clothes get cleared out at any price so the extra trendier newest fashions can be moved in.
Right now most of the 2008-9 winter clothes have been marked down and moved out for new spring fashions. This is a bad time to buy. Big markdowns will be coming again in June and and blow out in July. Very predictable. And I think the sales in Russia are much better than in America. Clothes are cuter too. |

P.S.
I was in London, shopping after the holidays a couple of years ago. Many of the same stores there that you find in Moscow. Everything was on sale there too, and all the very same clothing was on sale in Moscow when I got back after the holidays cheaper than the prices in London!
Yeah, I bought in Moscow. |

i hope i can put the URLs here.
I guess it will help more than all my words
http://www.europe-tc.ru/ (ENG version of site is available) - Kievskaya metro station.
http://www.atrium.su/eng/index.wbp (ENG version) - Kurskaya metro station.
For turkish etc cheap clothes, sadly no english version but can be easily found close to Yuzhnaya metro station.
Okhotny ryad is as expensive as any other local store in fact in Moscow. So feel free to go there.
Avoid GUM or TSUM near Kremlin )) They are un-sensibly expensive.
As said above lots of shopping available in Moscow. The prices are sometimes higher than those in Europe without any reasonable explanation. So don't feel confused and just walk away if you see the prices are incredibly high )) |

No, Moscow shopping malls are terrible places to shop for souvenirs.
The premium best place for souvenirs is the Izmolova. Partisanskaya Metro station, dark blue line north. Souvenir heaven. Just follow the people out of the Metro station. Can't miss it. |

Well i guess the most common places for buying souvenirs are Kremlin area and Arbat street bith situated in the city center.
As for Izmaylovo if i were you i would be quite afraid of getting lost there. Never been there myself though.
And it's far from the city center.
your choice, anyway |

Hi, Brad! When I was in Moscow a few weeks ago I found a very nice online shop www.kawaiifactory.ru It is in Russian only, but you can ask somebody to translate it for you. Or you can call them at +7 (495) 629 51 31 (their staff speaks very good English) and visit their show-room, 5 minutes walk from the Red Square. They sell very nice bags designed by young Russian artists. I even found few bags with matrioshkas there, very cute ones. If you go there, say hi from Maja! |
