I spent five years living in Russia, in St. Petersburg, and never really had any problems other than those you tend to get in big cities. I also passed through Ekaterinburg at one point, and had no problems there.

One of my jobs when I was there was looking after British students and dealing with any problems they had; they only got any trouble when they were out late and drunk, or in big groups and talking loudly in English.

I would suggest to your parents that you'll be fine, as long as you followed the same advice as anyone would do if visiting a big, foreign city - dress fairly casually so as not to stick out, don't flash your cash, don't wander into unlit, unfamiliar areas, don't get drunk and stagger round the streets, don't talk loudly in a foreign language etc. etc.

I'm sure you'll have a great time...it's an eye-opening city

Indeed , if you dont go looking for trouble in Russia you wont find any , The Ural region is fantastic you'll have a great time , I drove through there almost 3 years ago and my only regret is not being able to spend more time there as we were working to a timetable for visa reasons (Russia being very big it takes time to get across it) , cant tell you the name of the place , but we stopped one night at a roadside truck stop village in the mountains (the only thing I can describe the place as) that had flame tortches for street lighting (there were the odd electric one two but the flame ones were better) and the wooden shops and cafaterias would be at home in the Ameriacn old west (only in about two feet of snow Laughing ) , but locals were VERY friendly and the place had a great atmosphere and I remember that night as one of the highlights of that trip.
Another highlight was later on after we lost our car , we ended up on the Trans-Siberian railway , when we stopped at Chita we got our hands on a fairly good (big) bottle of Russian Vodka (reasonably priced as well , many thanks to the Russian soilders who told us where to get this) and the bottle had markings on it to show you how drunk you would be at various points , it was of course completely wrong , we were much more drunk than the bottle said we would be Laughing ......so definatly try the Vodka
Other than that , again its a great part of Russia , the people are freindly and you can say you've been in REAL Russia , as most Russians will tell you , Moscow and St Petersburg are more European than Russian. (and if you get really homesick for the food , theres no shortage of Mc Donalds there either Laughing )
