Hello-Last september i spent 7 days in stp. What a fantastic visit & beautiful city.I am returning for 10 days this august and i have a question.I wish to visit helsinki for a few days(as my friend shops there frquently)but i am wondering---as long as i carry all my proper documents, visa, invitation, insurance etc-will i need special documents or visa to visit finland?will there be a possible problem re-entering russia?I dont know for sure if we will do this-i am curious just so i can plan accordingly. Thanks for any info you can give me.I have followed all the advice from everyone here and my first trip to russia was a blast and went off without a glitch.I cant wait to come back.Scott.

Americans don't need a visa to visit Finland. But if you want to exit from Russia and then return to Russia then you will need either two tourist visas or a double-entry business visa for Russia.

Better to fly to Helsinki, spend some time there, then enter Russia just the once and fly back home from Helsinki.

With the dollar and Ruble weak against the Euro, shopping in Finland is not so popular nowadays. Unless you really want to see Helsinki and waste several days of your limited time in St Petersburg you should reconsider your plan. Helsinki is clean, organized and modern but it is not a fun destination, clubs and restaurants close early, there is very little to do after a few hours sightseeing. The the undeveloped rural or wilderness, smaller towns and villages are interesting however. I like it but would not trade time in SPb for Helsinki time unless there was a very good reason.
I've lived in St Petersburg 6 years and seldom leave because I have more fun and variety of activities than anywhere. I've been back to California only 3 times in 6 years and after 2 days back "home" I am bored silly and can't wait to get back to SPb.

Have a great visit
Stan
